New guy with Arrow/Fletch/Broadhead Question

Post by Michihunter »

I'm fairly new here and have learned a lot from you people in regards to Crossbows. I have made my own compound arrows for years but need advice on crossbow arrows. I shoot a Exomax and will use it for deer almost exclusively. I hunt northern Michigan usually in some God forsaken swamp. Before I order raw shafts etc. here's my question. What do you guys advise? Carbon such as Easton Powerbolts, or Easton XX75 in 2219 size. I plan on using Wasp Boss broadheads in either 100 or 125 weight. Also whats the thoughts on fletching? Blazer 2 inch, or Duravanes in 4 inch or 5 inch which I have a ton of already. Do you really notice much difference between 4 and 5 inch? I'm leaning toward XX75's as the areas I hunt usually have ankle to knee deep water so a pass through will be lost forever. I also plan to hunt bear with this setup as well. My shots will all be 35 yds or less. Thanks for all advice and opinions.

welcome... as far as aluminum and carbon you will get mixed reviews. Some dont like carbon and some dont like aluminum. I just got tired of my aluminum bending after pass throughs. Carbon usually would splinter or break before it bends. That way you know the arrows bad

Most shoot gold tip laser 2's here or a 2216 aluminum shaft. I shoot the laser 2's myself and have never had a issue with them. I tried the power bolts, but didnt like them since I can do more with the FOC on the laser 2's since the shaft is lighter. You can get 12 raw shafts with inserts for about 45bucks on bowhuntersuperstore. As far as vanes, I shoot the blazer 2inch ones. I have the duravane 3inch on my compound bow and love those also. But they bend easy. The blazers are some of the toughest out and plus they can help your FOC by a few.

If you are worried about losing a arrow, maybe a bright wrap or luminock would help? Ive never lost a arrow to date(knock on wood), but I have Flo Yellow wraps on mine. Without those, I wouldnt find them at all LOL.

goodluck and ask us any questions you might have.. also, its a blast working your own arrows also;)

You cant't beat crazyfarmers botlt or Dan Millers Miller's killers. Both are the best. You most get brass inserts and both offet them.. I have one of the and they shoot great. Check with both for price.. Crazy farmer is a fellow Va, Guy. I am form Southwest Va. Just had my farm wiped out by a tornato.

What part of southwest Virginia are you from, Bill?

I'm very familiar with Tazewell and Buchanan counties. Have lots of friends in Clear Fork and Burke's Garden in Tazewell County.

Sorry to hear about your tornado. :(

I hope you and your family made it out ok with no injuries. As long as everyone is ok then thats all that really matters. I was in a tornado once when I was a kid visiting friends in Ohio. Mother nature sure can kick her heels up at times. Best of luck to you.

I agree with most of what Crazy says. GT lazer II with 110 gr brass inserts. 2" Blazers and 100 or 125 Slick Trick Mags is my hunting rig for 3 bow. The size of vanes you choose will depend somewhat on the FOC of your arrow. Arrows with high FOC (18-20%) end to fly best with the small vanes for me. If your FOC is less then say 15 % then a 4" or even 5" vane may be the ticket.
