Summit Viper Treestand
My local archery store has ''Summit Viper Classic'' climbing treestands for $159.00 ...This seemed like a baigain but I know little about climbers.

Absolutely correct RichRich wrote:The "Classic" is a steel stand vice aluminum Viper SS (27 lbs vice 20 lbs). 7 pounds is a substantial difference in weight if hunting deep in the woods, small body size, age, health, etc. I'd go with the Viper SS, you'll be happier with the lighter weight.

I like the aluminum viper a lot. It is in my top three as far as climbers go.
I would never have the heavy one, If your going to haul that much freight on your back you might as well haul a tree lounge and really be comfortable.
The biggest problem I find with a viper is the distribution of weight on your back when using the straps in the manner described in the instruction manual. The twenty pounds becomes a "heavy" twenty pounds when you do so. I went with an aftermarket set of straps and solved that problem.

i have the aluminum viper and actually left in in the woods all season for three years around the base of the tree. i now use ladder stands, but they do not compare with the summit for comfort. i love that stand! the portability and versatility is just a bonus! figure out how much you will really be carrying it. if you need the portability, spend the extra loot and get the aluminum. personally, i would be happy with either. i got mine for free. a farmer nearby had people trespassing on his land. he told a neighbor kid to go around and take down any stand he found on the farm. the kid gave me pick of the litter. bad news for trespassers -good news for me.

I have the SS hanging in my garage.. I might use it maybe 1once per 2 years since I hate carrying it in and climbing the tree. Its quiet, but still I perferr making no sound at all and it still makes noise when climbing. Its great if you have to hunt public land though so you can get in and out and take it with you. But I only hunt private land and I have ladders and hang ons so they dont make a sound at all.
A climber is nice for scouting a new peice of land though... if you get one, get the SS. If you get something heavy, you will find you wont like carrying it in the woods at all. Ill take my 6 tree step, 15ft up hang ons anyday over anything though

Depending where you by the ss, is 7lbs less worth 125.00 to 150.00 more?

Re: post sub
true that:) if he's going to do alot of moving around it might be, but if its just going to hang on a tree and not get hauled in and out the 7pounds doesnt make a huge differenceLimbs and Bolts wrote:Depending where you by the ss, is 7lbs less worth 125.00 to 150.00 more?

With what I saw this turkey season with respect to deer I will be hunting from the ground just as I was turkey hunting the deer tolerated a lot of movement, even waving at them to get them out of there before the turkey's woke up. Waving at them made them move out but in no hurry and no tails.
