Wax or no wax?
Wax or no wax?
The instruction DVD that came with my New Vixen II Excal. said to wax the serving and string after each time you use it. But I remember reading some where not to wax the serving, and will standard bowstring wax work?

Wax the serving. Any wax is better than no wax at all.Migabby wrote:The instruction DVD that came with my New Vixen II Excal. said to wax the serving and string after each time you use it. But I remember reading some where not to wax the serving, and will standard bowstring wax work?

What approximately is the string and serving shot life with and without waxing - standard factory string?
After about how many shots should the string be turned over to use the other side of the serving?
Couldn't there be a Teflon type coating for the rail and a Teflon type shrink tubing over the serving to greatly extend the life of the serving? Maybe even add a few fps?
Learning a whole bunch from all you folks.
Thanks...

My friend bought a GT Mag last month and is experincing serving seperation from the Accudraw claws, probally has shot it less then 24 times when I asked about waxing the serving. He said he was told not recomended, just us the Lube kit.

To reply to bkisel question on how long the serving will last without wax.
I shot a #1989 FF string 110 shots before the serving wore through.
I had only waxed the string once prior to it first use.
I re served it now I wax the string and serving and wipe jig a loo to the track every 8 - 10 shots or when I can't feel the slipperiness of the jig a loo.

Separation of the serving is not a result of waxing or not waxing. It's a combination of the wax on the string prior to serving, the claw pressure and the tightness of the serving application.Migabby wrote:My friend bought a GT Mag last month and is experincing serving seperation from the Accudraw claws, probally has shot it less then 24 times when I asked about waxing the serving. bstout . . .I did a few of those wax experiments. I always got more shots per serving with wax. A lot more. I reached a point of deminishing returns at around 20 shots. Applying every 20 shots got just as good results as applying every 5 shots or every shot. However, applying after 30+ shots, I'd lose about 10-15% life on the serving. I didn't do any out past 35 shots. I did one without waxing . . .seems like it lasted almost 100 shots. All this was on the Exomax . . .the results will vary a lot on the Vixen. The Vixen may fair well without wax . . .let me know. Thanks.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.

I predict it does around 150 shots. You need to keep a running record(shot log). It's too easy to lose count.
Maybe we could run a forum pool . . .number of total shots and the tie breaker will be the date.

I'm getting about 150-200 shots per serving out of my Vixen. I wax about every 45-50 shots or so (since I shoot about that much at a 3D).

I have always waxed the string and serving and some servings seem to last forever while some don't fare so well. I think it's more a matter of how the serving was initially applied (like serving with the string under extreme tension after it has been stretched for some time) than the use of wax on the serving.
Boo's strings are by far the best for serving life I have ever used. To be fair to Gustavo (GAD), I haven't tried one of his strings yet so I can't compare them to Boo's.
Try as I might I just can't get my own servings to hold up that well. Guess I need to build a jig to stretch the string, and probably switch from the BCY crossbow serving. I sometimes wonder if the standard crossbow serving diameter is just too big to prevent separation?
I agree Bob, but I do wax my string & serving frequently. A little wax rubbed in the string and serving does as much (or probably more) good as a huge glob of wax smeared on the outside and not rubbed in. My check for excess wax is to inspect the belly of the limbs after a shot or two after applying wax. If there are splatters of wax on the limbs I feel like I either applied too much, or didn't get it rubbed in well enough. If it doesn't fray...I see no point in "gooping it up" just for the sake of it.
