G5 Squaring Tool?

Post by Real McCoy »

How many use the G5. Is this something that is necessary to bolt building. Does it really improve accuracy.

I use it when ever I put on a broadhead. You will find that broadhead alignment issues are rare if you just square your inserts.
I guess in theory you are better as far as strength goes if you square the shaft before installing the insert but I think it is largely unnecessary assuming care is taken when cutting the shaft. I have seen some poorly cut shafts and an ASD will take care of that. I have yet so see an insert that comes perfectly square. Bottom line is that you can get away without one but once you have one you will never do without. It is a poorly known fact but if you use your field points the inserts get damaged and most broadheads depend on a square insert face to align. Remove your field point and take a good hard look at the surface of the insert and make your own assumptions.

I make target bolts for myself and current WCSA World Jr Champion Brent Hankins who will be representing the USA in Portugal next week at the Worlds. I always use this tool. My apple top of the line saw does not cut perfectly straight (most saws do not). Does this make the bolt more accurate-maybe, maybe not (the long brass points we use have a very long shank which probably squares them up on even a really jagged edge, but I don't like leaving anything to chance.

Look up G5 Outdoors and look for the ASD. Squaring the insert means that you get the face of the insert square to the shaft.

I couldn't imaging building an arrow without one. Not only will it square the shaft perfectly it allows you to shave the shaft down grain by grain to get exact matches on arrow weights.

I use it on every arrow I build as well. Just want to be sure it is square.

Squared insert

Post by agingcrossbower »

All here seem to build their own arrows. When you buy arrows should you worry about insert squaring or check them. Thanks

You bet you should! I haven't seen a perfectly square insert yet. Aside from that your field tips will mess up the face of the insert.
