Controlled deer hunt ends early
Me my dad and my oldest son went out on Monday morning for the controlled deer hunt and managed to get a deer each.
On Tuesday me and both my sons went out to fill my youngest sons tag plus an additional tag we had.
The plan was we were to sit in our tree stands for a few hours then I would do the deer drives, trying to push the deer towards them so my 2 boys would try to fill the last 2 tags. I would only shoot a buck if the opportunity presented itself.
When we got to our property we split up and went to our tree stands for the morning sit.
At about 7am I here a crunch and see a flash of antler through the bush.
It looks like a nice size buck and he starts coming towards me. I get the gun ready and now he's getting close, about 40 yards.
As I get the sights on him he looks up at me in my tree stand and turns broadside and starts walking away.
I had the cross hairs behind the shoulder and pulled the trigger.
He did a donkey kick and ran off. I fired again and seen him stumble but kept on running like nothing happened. I then see him slow down and start walking and then I lost sight of him but heard a big crash.
I radioed my sons and told them that I might have a buck down so we could only shoot one more deer at at 8am to come down from the tree stands and we would look for the buck.
About 10 minutes later I hear more crashing coming from where I last seen the buck.
I had terrible thoughts now on the shot.
I don't like shooting a deer walking, even at 40 yards the slug is going to hit further back and that's what I thought happened.
I thought it was a gut shot or maybe a liver shot and he was getting up trying to run away.
As I replayed the shot in my head I new I put the cross hairs tight behind the shoulder and as I was thinking about it, I heard a gun shot coming from where my youngest sons tree stand is.
He calls on the radio and says that he just shot a deer.
I told him to tag it wait for his brother then get over here so we can look for the buck.
I didn't want to get down and look until they arrived because I had the spot where I last seen the deer marked and I would guide them there from up the tree stand (once down everything looks different).
Once they arrived, I guided them to where I last seen the deer.
I climbed down from the tree stand and as I was untying my gun from the pull cord my son calls me and says "found him, he's a nice one".
The shot, was a double lung shot. He ran about 80 yards and when we found him, he was leaning up against some dead fall brush . There was also a huge pool of blood about 5 feet in front of him.
What I can figure the second crash was the deer fell, laid there then tried to get up just before expiring and crashed again into the dead fall.
When we were examining him we noticed that there was a small chunk of antler missing on one of his main beams.
I guess that's why he stumbled on the second shot. Luckily I just grazed it or I would have blown his antler off.
This is a picture after we dragged him a little closer to where we could get him out.
He's a 10 point main frame with one scoreable kicker.
