when i got mine in sept ..the first thing all my friends started saying was..man that thing is loud..not wow does it look well made ..or danggg it shoots fast,,or even ,,man is that crossbow accurate,,all i heard was how loud it was and how big the limbs were,,,
well first off,,one of them dry fired his and didnt even get to
use it most of the season cuz it so long to get it back and when he did it wasnt right so he sent it back only to wait a month for it to return,,
the other guy never killed a deer this season with his "quiet" crossbow..
I shot 3 deer with mine (didnt recover one,,my fault)
and althogh we never did a shooting contest ..i know i can whup em good if we do..
So i think if i need any silencer it would be the one wabi suggested . just so i dont have to hear any more junk from the guys who dont own and thus dont know what they are missin.
how come silence is such and issue?...My browning 3006 doesnt have any whiskers, limbsavers,or sts stuff on it and it takes deer every year..Just sayin :?

"After months of testing Excalibur Crossbow will release the new S5 String Stopper System early in 2011. The unique design will noticeably reduce string vibration and noise, the S5 System will fit any Excalibur crossbow model made after 2004 and utilizing the forward mounted limb system and machined riser."

I just cut and pasted this quote from the Excalibur web site - I believe that this little gadget will probably be the answer for most of us. Oh Yeah, you can hang on all kinds of String Leeches and Ultra Quads but it will cost you FPS in the long run. Check out Uncle Ted's Video on UTube "Ted Nugent Crossbow Tech Tip 2009"! How MUch STuff do you want to hang on your Xbow? Remember what Bill T. said - "KISS"! Live IT! The last thing your target will hear is "THUNK"! OH DANG IT!! Blimey Mate, I thing I've been THUNKED!!

I gave up on the mission to quiet the equinox. Wasn't too ímpressed with the sts and have since taken it off. I prefer to keep the bow light as possible, and to me the difference was minimal.
Like another user, after a lot of testing I too noticed a reasonable difference in rubber (2 small 1" pieces of rubber fuel hose with a slit in it, in my case) placed around the stirrop at the sides or front. Amazing the sound that rezonates out of this stirop. No metal twang at all, just a dull thud now ! Sounds quality now, with no measurable difference in weight.

I like the idea of the rubber on the sturrup how did you do it.

quote="bkisel"]I’m anxiously awaiting the availability of Excalibur’s “STS” like product. Isn’t an “STS” a something you can put on a crossbow that can quiet it down without any loss of speed?

Also, here are my xbow LimbSavers mounted elsewhere because they kept flying off the limbs. Don’t know if they made the bow more quiet but neither do they make the bow slower. I keep them on because I paid for them and think they kinda look cool mounted where they are.

Oh yeah, rubber coated stirrup did, I believe, take some metal twang sound out of the bow when fired.

I think way too much is made of a "quiet bow". Like I've heard it said here before....even a "quiet" bow is loud to a deer. All things relative. Anyone who has hunted deer enough knows that what is "quiet" to a human is NOT quiet to a deer. Just part of what makes hunting them successfully a test of skill.

I don't care about hunting noise. I think most people agree thats not usually an issue, not here anyway.
For me, its for my own sake when doing a lot of target work, my partner, and my neighbors whom I want to keep getting along with. Without the high end metal twang now, the sounds not offensive and they don't even notice now when I'm shooting it. Although the Db of mine may not be significantly lower than yours on a DB Meter, the difference is huge as far as high end noise and annoyance factor. I also love the sweet dull thud I get from a shot, rather than the sound of cracking an alluminium pipe.

Thats true, a quality string with whiskers gives a noticable difference.
But when testing the sts, it didn't make as much difference on my equinox. It was less noticable to me than rubber fitted on my Stirop, which is why I took the sts off in the end. I've got it at a point where I'm happy with it now, with no noticable weight difference. Thats all I can ask for ! :D If your not careful. It can turn into a never ending quest, which may never end. As it is an inherantly loud weapon.
