How to line up fletching with broadhead blades?
Re: How to line up fletching with broadhead blades?
Its funny this thread has popped up. I was just about to start asking "what was the theory behind the lining up of the broadhead to vanes". I had been thinking about it for a while and couldn't come up with a good reason why it would be better.

Ferget the indexing yer BH to the fletching. What BH's are you using ? What arrows ? I use half dz diff set-ups can hit cat squirrels head at 30 yds

After reading the good reports on Slick Tricks I bought some 125 grain mags and got to try them yesterday. I used some old cut down XX75 2117 and 2216 arrows with Blazers, 3" and 4" feathers. Just screwed them on and shot. The POI was the same as my FPs out to 50 yards.
Beforehand I just made sure the shaft ends were square and straightened the arrows to within .002" if they had a bend.

I use firebolts and boltcutters so far, but have just bought some Slicktrick crossbow broadheads (175 gr).vixenmaster wrote:Ferget the indexing yer BH to the fletching. What BH's are you using ? What arrows ? I use half dz diff set-ups can hit cat squirrels head at 30 yds
I would like to thank everyone who chimed in so far--all the comments have been real food for thought. It seems like anything else in hunting/equipment maintenance: there are many different ways of doing things, many of which are effective, and all of them based on experience and worthy of consideration and discussion. So thank you for humoring my question and educating me with your valuable thoughts.

ok aligning the vanes to the broadheads does definitely make a more accurate orientation if done right as far as flying in the same manner as a broadhead , disturbance thing is right but you also wheh not oriented have the blades working against blades somewhat, they way i align mine is they sell little o rings that you put on shaft of the the broadheads it makes them align perfectly, its more critical to align if you use 5 inch textured vanes loike i do, i also use a 3 degree offset, now if you use a four blade broadhead and know where they fly, its ok as long as they are aligned in same orientation, but aligning poroperly does give you edge as flying same as fieldpoint especially at long ranges , the o rings work the best to accomplish this i have tons of them if anyone needs them,

Add me to the 'old wives tale' crowd. One of my worst 'here, hold my beer and watch this' moments came several years ago when I attempted to heat carbon shafts to index blades to vanes.
Yeah, shafts. I wasn't smart enough to just ruin one.
You do not want to do this!
4 blade Slicks were the end of the controversy for me, YMMV.

Just a question, why do some think indexing is more accurate, I shoot two and three blade and they hit where I aim, I tried indexing yrs ago no difference on poi, try indexing two or four blade bh's, just would like to know, I'm not knocking anyone who does, I see no need

Re: How to line up fletching with broadhead blades?
if you align them with like an o ring they will fly closer to a fieldpoint, because the vanes and broadhead arent working against each other at shorter yardage and on deer sized game its negligible , but if your a long range accuracy freak like me, well i have to align them , i can hit squirrells at 50 , now if you use slick tricks the only thing you have to do is align them all the same , to take out all the variables between them , so whether 3 or 4blade they will shoot according to your zero , the most important thing is how you align one , align them all like that lol, like i said under 30 yards and on game its negligible ,, ostensibly , the alignment gives them more speed ,, if what your doing works stick with it , why fix something that isnt broke?

Like I said tried both no difference, if your shaft isn't true it don't matter what you do, they can't be more accurate if folks are hitting the same thing you are without indexing, shoots good would have done find, but more accurate no, that makes folks think they must index their shafts to be accurate which is not true, happy shooting

Some of the things said here defies conventional logic and I suspect some laws of physics. All I can say is that I like salt!

i like aligning them darn it!!!, i guess some other facets are involved weight speed , type of broadhead etc i will tell you at longer distances they do fly true, when you fly a plane you change surface area and how different angles work againsnt and in conjunction with one another , a flying bolt must adhere to same principles

My comment was directed at all postulations, myself included. None are based on tests under controlled conditions. None eliminated the shooter or the bow. All are guesses, myself included. If there was any belittling it would be directed at myself as well.Xbowkiller wrote:Nice belittling.Boo wrote:Some of the things said here defies conventional logic and I suspect some laws of physics.
