New Vortex just put togeather - question
I received my new Vortex today and have assembled it. Got it sitting letting the blue loctite dry before I shoot it any. Does the brand new string need waxing before shooting or is it already waxed? Anything else I need to do before shooting it?
Yep, my first Excal.
PS- Hooks up or down on cocking rope?

When I did mine with the blue loctite, I did not wait for it to dry.
If you want it to dry, then let it dry on the parts before assembly.
Shorten your cocking rope so that string will be pulled back an inch or two when you engage the hooks. This shortens the distance you will need to pull the rope and lock the hooks in place.
Hooks up or down do not matter, your choice.

I would wax the serving a bit. Might not need it but won't hurt it.
Make sure all bolts are snug one more time.
Always double check you have a bolt on the rail before pulling the trigger.
Hooks for me facing away. Just seems more natural that way.
Most important have fun & shoot safe...

If you're wondering if your vortex is accurate look at this link. I just did this today getting ready for a pig hunt! Hooks down on your string and you could put a little wax on the string but you don't need to. Never shoot at the same dot twice on the target no matter the range!!!

I would wax my string real good rub it in & use Daltons wax only on the serving. I preferr my hooks facing up so i can see the open slot. As i pull up it pulls along the rail but not lifting hooks up. I don't want my hooks coming over the rail.
Re: New Vortex just put togeather - question
Ok, where do you use the locktite, on every bolt ?? I put mine together not using any, and I did not read in the instructions we had to, but I guess it makes good sense.
Vixenmaster, I thought Daltons was good for the whole string ?? What do you use on the rest of the string??

I went ahead and pulled the string and gave the whole thing a pretty good waxing with my regular bow wax as that is all I have. I went light on the center serving and rubbed it in real good. I shoot a Parker Buck Buster also and I always use the hooks facing up on it to keep it from jumping the rails. Glad to see it will work OK on the Excal also.vixenmaster wrote:I would wax my string real good rub it in & use Daltons wax only on the serving. Thanks for the replys guys. Now I need to shoot it. Probably tomorrow afternoon.

I used locktite on every bolt and screw I put on myself with the exception of the scope mount screws.

I don't use locktite unless i have a troublesome screw or bolt. I usually try clear fingernail polish before going to locktite. Daltons speed wax is really good fer center serving but nutten says it can't be used on the whole string. I see they have new crossbow wax versionBullzeye wrote:Ok, where do you use the locktite, on every bolt ?? The blue version holds quite a lot better than fingernail polish and is not much harder to break when you need the screw removed. It is a LOT more expensive though. I use clear fingernail polish on my field points and broadheads.
I want to get some Daltons but do not want to pay $10.00 shipping to get it.

Either loc tite those 4 lil buggers or check them often. If you have the stock off the bow, check the trigger screws.I used locktite on every bolt and screw I put on myself with the exception of the scope mount screws.
Mine shot loose.
The only screws I don't loc-tite are the ones holding the split scope rings together, never had a loose one there on any toy.

I tend to forget not everyone shoots a vixen or other simular powered poundage model. So maybe the locktite would be a better choice on those models 175 lbs on up.

Not trying to hijack your thread but...
I have been trying to find some dry powder lubricant called Jigaloo that others have been using on Archery Talk on their crossbows to spray their rails and their center servings, its supposed to cut down on the friction extending the serving life by a large margin. I was able to find nearly the same thing in a 3M brand here in the states because Jigaloo is no longer being sold in the United States according to all the distributors I've talked to. This dry powder lubricant is very slick and I've used it several times so far and it really slicks up the rail and serving without any mess whatsoever. I'm going to continue to use it for a while and just wax my string but not my serving and try this stuff out for awhile.
