SW Ontario deer hunting license help

Post by tsc »

First off, let me apologize for the long post.

I just got my first crossbow for Christmas, I've been a long time "gun" hunter. I hunt in SW Ontario and we have the controlled deer/shotgun hunt (WMU 90 B).

So my question/clarification of my understanding is actually two parts.

First part

For my "Bow" tag, I can just go get a regular tag from Service Ontario (or regular issuing location) and use it as a "Buck" tag. If I want to hunt "doe's"; I have to put in for the antler-less draw. I can also put in for the Controlled deer hunt, but I have to get my second tag/"gun tag" from the MNR office in Alymer (or can I get it from a regular issuing location/ Service Ontario). Does this sound reasonably correct??

Second part

My hunting partner is not a local and comes down to hunt. He doesn't have any archery equipment, but wants to try--So I was going to lend him my equipment. If he also puts in for a "bow" tag and applies for the controlled hunt; can he convert his "bow" tag (if it hasn't been filled), so that he can use it for the controlled hunt? Instead of buying a "bow" and a "controlled" tag?

You both must apply for the controlled hunt together or individually in the WMU you wish to hunt most times if succesfull you can shoot antlered or antlerless.
When you purchase your buck tag you may only hunt antlered only deer with your bow in southern Ont or rifle hunt in the north if you want to doe hunt in the north you must apply for the WMU you want to hunt.
If you want to bow hunt for antlerless you must apply for the WMU you wish to hunt.
You can purchase for more tags in certain WMUs.
I think I covered it?
Alway's check your current regs
Happy hunting :D

Thank you Madmax2

We've been doing the controlled hunt for almost 10 years now. It's the "bow" tag that is new to us/throwing me off and I can't find anything in the regs. What we've done in the past is submit for the controlled hunt via the telephone and when we "win", we'll go buy our deer tag/seal.

So for my situation (as the bow/gun hunter). I put in for both the antler-less and the controlled draw. Where do I get my second "tag/seal" for my controlled hunt (I'm guessing the MNR office in Alymer) and when should I get it.

For my buddy's situation. If he applies to both the antler-less and controlled deer hunt (and is successful in both)..... Duh, just had a 2+2=4 moment.... If he doesn't shoot a deer with a bow, he can use his "bow" tag with his controlled deer card during controlled season. But if he is successful with the bow, he's in the same situation as I am in. Where do we get a second "tag/seal"?

Awesome, Thank you Ont_Excal.

Wasn't sure if it was "additional seals". Makes sense.

I agree to check your regulations for your specific area. All Archery only areas close for gun seasons, but most gun seasons will allow archery equipment to be used. But check your area to be sure.

I checked. From my interpretation, all WMUs allow bow hunting during gun season as none exclude it...in fact some list bow and muzzle loaders only.

My area (WMU 90B) excludes bow during gun season.

On page 67 (not the pdf page) of the 2012 regulations it states when you are able to bow hunt (Basically Oct 1 to Dec 31 less 2 weeks of gun season). Then you scroll down to the controlled deer hunt stuff on page 70. It states it's "SG ,ML only" for my WMU

tsc I asked the same question. Here is the reply I got from a MNR provincial Enforcement Specialist.

"To hunt deer during a controlled deer hunt, you must have a controlled deer hunt validation tag for that specific controlled deer hunt. Bow hunters may not hunt during a controlled deer hunt unless they have a validation tag for that hunt. Most controlled deer hunts do not allow the use of bows during the week of the hunt. The only controlled deer hunt that allows the use of bows is the December controlled deer hunt in WMU80. You may check specific hunts by looking the table 5(Deer-Open Season) of Ontario Regulations 679/98 (Open Seasons-Wildlife). If the class of firearm listed in column 4 of Table 5 is 4, 5 or 6 you may not use bows during that controlled deer hunt. (Classes of firearms are defined in section 69 of Ontario regulation 665/98 (hunting).

In WMU 80 hunters who are hunting in the December controlled deer hunt with a bow are required to wear hunter orange."

Hope this is helpful

So I've done a little more digging and found this "brochure" from 2011 --- and I hope it doesn't change, but this is the MNR we're talking about.

I think my interpretation of it is correct--Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

If I want a second seal for Archery season, I can get one as of July 16th (combining the dates from the 2012 hunting regs and changing them to reflect what is said in the brochure).

If I want a second seal (Controlled Hunt), I can get one from Service Ontario in October
