Bowstring serving

Post by tsbyars »

I have the 200 lb Vortex and make my own bowstrings for it. I am using the B50 dacron material and have experimented with many different types of material for the serving. I have not used the Halo but did find something at my local sporting goods store that has worked better than any other thing that I have tried. It is the Power Pro 65lb braided fishing line. I have tried larger and smaller sizes of this but the 65lb seems to be just about right. This stuff last for more shots than anything else I have tried and is easy to apply. A 150 yard spool can be bought for about $16 and will probably be a lifetime supply for me. It is probably very similar to the Halo material but much less expensive.
If anyone else makes your own strings and gives this a try then let me know how it worked out for you.

A while back, I had considered trying some braided fishing line, but, didn't have the guts to give it a try.

Glad to hear it's working out for you. Thanks for sharing the information.

How interesting to see this. I recently talked to a well experienced archer who works in that business. He has an Excalibur and talked me into trying Power Pro braided fish line. He suggested the 100 lb. line for my Vortex. This stuff is .046 diameter and like yourself I am finding it to be very tough, durable and inexpensive. Refering to a different thread here, I was concerned with the smaller diameter of the 1989 flemish string. I know I gained something back with a .046 serving. I have been watching for wear from the rail but do not seem to see anything. Also, if you look at the box it says this stuff is made of 100% Spectra fibre. It might be woven different but I think thats what Halo is made of. The spool I got was 275 yd. so I won't be needing any for a while.

Sounds interesting!

BTW - the diameter is:
65# - .016 (.41mm)
100# - .018 (.46mm)
150# - .022 (.56mm)
200# - .030 (.76mm)

I'm thinking 150# might be a good size to try. :D

The strings I am making have 32 strands of B50 in them and I have found that the 65# works best with that. I had tried the 100# line but it seemed to separate faster on my strings. I am shooting 445 grain arrow weight and get 299-300fps through my chronograph consistently with this setup.
Thanks for your reply............

When you say 100# seperated faster do you mean a lot faster? I Put it on an excalibur #1989 flemish string the way Don described, backing it off 6 turns from brace height in the jig. I have almost 200 shots on the string and it shows little sign of wear and no seperation. A lot better than that green stuff that was factory served.

On my strings the 100# separated a lot faster. I think it is because of the large diameter of my strings to begin with (32 strands B50). If I make a string from fast slight material the 100# will probably be the better choice. I too am getting 200+ shots on a serving without any problems.
Best Regards, and good hunting.....

Gotta try some of that Power Pro Braided line for serving. I have used it MANY times bass fishing and can get it at most Walmarts for less than $18.00.
