Cleaning antlers for mounting

Post by Pydpiper »

Decided to make a small mount for my 8 point, but didn't know where to start.
Met up with a good buddy who always told me "I can clean anything", and he made good on his word.
He rolled up his trucks back door, turned the heat up to 250 degrees, and let it loose on my deers skull. We just lopped it off today so everything was still pretty fluid, ears and scalp intact, and now it is squeaky clean. Ready for the next step.
I need to dry it, and somehow find a way to keep it white, good to go. Part of me wants to send it in to get hydro-dipped in Real Tree, but I will try for white first.
Just a little project while I wait for the controlled hunt to finish up. Hot water moving really fast sure helped.

That pressure washer blew every bit of nastiness clean out of the skull.
I just got in from shaping the skull for mounting, need to tidy it up a bit first..
Ninepoint sent a great link for mounting it!

That looks like a pretty good "no boil" method to clean up a skull.

I need to get off my butt and mount the small set of antlers I cut off the buck I got 2 seasons ago. I bought a plastic skull mounting kit and had a friend at work camo dip it for me.
