How far should the REDS be from the string out of the box.
I placed the REDS on my 355 with no adjustment to the string out of the box, and my string rests HARD up against the REDS. Do I need my string tightened to back it off from the REDS?
Give a few twists to the string so it is 1/8" from the REDS. Adjust as needed to keep that 1/8" distance.

It is a 1/2" from were the riser meets the rail. At the joint. Witch come out to be 1/8" off the reds. And that info come from Excalibur and Dan Miller. And that's all I to sat about that. That is your braise height for the 355 & 380.........Good shooting.
Correct, you should have about a string width gap between the string and the bumpers.

When you set your brace height to where you like it I always take a black sharpie and make a little mark on the side of the barrel right underneath the string. That way you can tell if you string stretched really quickly. If you don't pay attention to string stretch your sights will be off. Its important that you keep it at the same brace height all the time.

Should one do that on a new bow prior to shooting it?

Since my new 355 doesn't have the R.E.D.S. and it has not been shot yet, and there is no distance to judge the string by, should I mark the barrel on my new string too?
Measure 1/2" back from where the barrel meets the riser and put a mark. This was my sweet spot on my 355 then you can always reference that mark.

Its not important the exact distance off the rubbers as everyone has thier own preference...Credit card, double card width, tripple, whatever....its personal choice. The important part is that there is some gap between rubbers and string, as the life of the rubbers can be significantly reduced as the string stretches and you have no gap. As with all excaliburs for consistant accuracy just mark where you like the string to sit on the rail and twist the string up when its needed to maintain that gap before shooting.
