?speed?
I keep reading in post people asking how can I get more speed.
Now I have a question
When hunting moose, bear, elk, deer, hog.
Where do we drop the concern for speed and consider kinetic energy?
I know I would like a bolt going at 270 - 300 fps with a kinetic energy around 80 - 90 ft pounds, then a bolt going 300 + fps with only 70 - 75 lbs .
Have I missed something here ?

Re: ?speed?
I myself was concerned with the deer jumping the shot because of sound Id like to push the limits with yardage and this crossbow And I figured faster was better My compound blows through deer and its only 56 pounds so I wasnt worried as much about that part

Re: ?speed?
Step up to the Matrix and you can have both speed and kinetic energy. How does this sound, 350 to 370 fps and over 100 ft pounds kinectic energy at 30 yards?

Are you using the exomax and what is your total arrow weight in grains?kd8jgu wrote:I keep reading in post people asking how can I get more speed.

Re: ?speed?
I think its a mix of speed and energy.
I am not a speed freak, but I do like enough energy
Shot placement is my number one concern, but just as equal importance is my maximum yardage. I choose not to shoot past 30 yards, since I can usually stalk closer or I pass on the shot. Its just not worth wounding an animal!
I shot an large adult doe last fall at 25 yards and she never moved at the sound of my Equinox. The arrow was a complete passthrough and she piled up approx 40 yards away. I found the arrow buried in the ground after passing through both her lungs.

Re: ?speed?
I just sold my Ibex which was flinging at 262 fps with 486gn bolt.
It killed 10 deer and 16 hogs.
I started with bolts weighing at 400 gn
They would blow thru but did not produce great injury.
I am now using the Exomax with the 486gn bolts
Were I am looking is I could fling a bolt at 350fps with a Metrix
What would my bolt weight have to be.
I do have pics of the damage to a hog with the Ibex the difference in damage is something else.
Between the bolt weights
Tomorrow night will be the first true hog hunt with the Exomax.
I do know with the setup I have I can drop the big boar out there.
He is well over 400lbs.
I will be out there by myself.
So when I hit him I want to know he will drop
The worst thing out there is a pissed off hog.

Re: ?speed?
Excellent point, but most of it is from marketing and perception, faster is better.
On that note speed can also translate to kinetic energy if the the correct tools are applied to the equation with the right knowledge. With speed being the easier of the two measuring it will always be at the fore front.
The important question is whether speed is being achieved with the lightest arrow or specific weighted arrow. In my case I chose an arrow around 425 grains and tried to achieve the highest speed which would translate into increased kinetic energy too.
Somewhere in all this there needs to be a better understanding of what needs to be done for the most successful harvest and balance of equipment.

Your initial KE off the string is 74 if you're doing 262fps with a 486 gr arrow.kd8jgu wrote:I just sold my Ibex which was flinging at 262 fps with 486gn bolt.

If you want to go 350 fps with a Matrix you need a 412gr arrow for the Matrix 380 and a 360 grain arrow for the Matrix 355.

Was the shot placement and angle the same? I know that my vixen II shooting 600 grain logs would decimate all bone infront of it. I had a quartering away shot on a deer, Went through 2 ribs on the way in 2 ribs on the way out and broke the main front leg bone! Then still was in the dirt afterward. This was with a bolt cutter and gold tip laser IV arrows. I was probably only shooting in the 240 fps area. Which is around 76-77 ft.lbs of KE
Im now shooting the super vixen (Matrix 355) with 505 grain arrows and I have 104.34 ft.lbs of KE This sucker really drives arrows into my targets I cant wait till deer season.
