I used to feel that way.
I went through two TenPoint scopes and one Vari-Zone before I changed my mind (each scope averaged one year's use before it failed). I made it a habit of shooting an arrow before each hunt to confirm accuracy. (where I hunt we have a shooting range I walk past on my way to the stand)
Went in one evening and my "test" shot was dead-on! Got in the stand and a nice doe came in well inside my comfort zone on range (inside 30 yards). I was shooting from my ladder stand with a padded shooting rail so no problems with a steady hold. Squeezed off my shot aiming at her lung area and watched the arrow (with lumenock) hit her in the shoulder blade (with little penetration)!
Off she went with the arrow stuck in her shoulder and flopping like crazy, so I knew it failed to penetrate far.
Climbed down, went straight to the shooting bench, and found the POI was now 6-8" high right!
I'm fairly sure the shot was probably non-fatal, but she went through a good bit of suffering I'm sure.
Decided right then I'd either solve the problem of the scopes failing unexpectedly, go with the peep sights, or quit deer hunting with a crossbow!
After a long chat with Danny Miller about the available crossbow scopes I took his advice and upgraded to a Leupold! He said he had never seen a Leupold fail yet - 0 returns or complaints. It's been a few years now, but if I remember right the Leupold cost me a little over $100. extra to upgrade from the failed Vari-Zone I returned to Danny. Been shooting a Leupold ever since (I did switch from the 2-7X VX1 to a 1-4X VX2 last year) and have yet to have any kind of a problem!
Yes, a Leupold is going to cost a good bit more than one of the "crossbow" scopes, but I feel I owe it to the game I hunt to use the best equipment I can afford. An Excalibur crossbow is competitively priced, but still a big investment, so another 10-15% added to the price is well worth it for the peace of mind in my opinion.
