M405 draws first blood on second Tom of the season
Hello everyone,
After taking a nice Tom with my Remington I decided to hunt with my new M405. I headed out nice and early on my second hunt of the season and set up. As it started to lighten up I could hear gobbling a couple fields over in the hardwoods. As the sun started to rise the Tom answered my hen calls and we went back and forth for about 20 minutes or so and I could tell he was slowly coming my way so I stopped answering him right after I returned his gobble with a gobble.
A short time later a nice looking Tom appeared through the fence line into the field I was in and started to strut. He paraded around back and forth slowly moving closer and eventually worked his way to my hen decoys and presented me with a nice shot at about 25 yards. I've never harvested using a bow and I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm not sure if my lumi-nock failed or I'm not use to the 405 because I didn't see my bolt go. The bolt knocked the Tom over he flopped a few times and that was it.
When I went out and recovered him I couldn't believe the damage that had been done~! I searched high and low for my bolt but couldn't find it. It was tough taking a decent picture of him without showing the damage as the shot was on a bit of an incline and entered in the sweet spot but exited high.
Is anyone else noticing that it's a funny season? Both of the Toms that I harvested were by themselves without any hens.
Cheers,

Nice Tom
Robin I`m having the exact opposite problem . Too many hens not leaving the toms .
They answer your calls on roost then the hens take them directly away . But with the warmth now maybe the hens will start leaving them .

Fantastic!!
Were you in a blind when you shot it?
Were you in a blind when you shot it?
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

Yes - I normally hunt with a 1/2 skirt because I find the blinds limit my field of view. I use the blind when it looks like we might get rain.bellerivercrossbowhunter wrote:Fantastic!!

As for my call used - I believe in making multiple calls so I presently use 5 calls (2 slate and 3 box)
The box call in the middle is the one that I use for gobbling as it is the oldest and sounds the best. I use the multiple calls believing (right or wrong) that I can make it sound like a numbers of birds are calling as none of my calls make the same sound.
As for my broadhead - 150 Boltcutters.
Keeping the fan open ... Patience and a little more patience. Once Rigor has started to set in you can position a bird and open the fan. With the right amount of Rigor the fan will stay open for a few seconds. I can show you about 200 pics that didn't turn out to 1 that does.
