Hi all,
I couldn't see a dedicated hello area so I'll do it here.
I'm a Brit (don't shoot me!) so unfortunately I can't bowhunt here, our FA Laws are a joke tbh.

I already own a TP GT Flex which I'm going to be shooting in 3D comps NFAS. I used to shoot an AFB, American Flatbow, that's what we call them here so we don't get confused with our English longbow. :)
I've been struggling to shoot it comfortably for many years due to a damaged left hand and wrist. I did ok taking a few medals but it was always quite painful.
I tried compound shooting left handed with a wrist release but that also hurt after a while due to nerve damage making my wrist sensitive.
Being a stubborn guy who hates being beaten I struggled on avoiding / ignoring the crossbow guys at shoots.

Anyhow, I eventually had enough of pain and thought ok lets try crossbow.
All I can say is WOW I've not had this much fun in years, seriously !
I've only had the GT Flex 8 weeks and I've been totally bitten by the Xbow bug.
The Flex is fine for comps cus we have to cock by hand and I can do 180lbs ok, no rope allowed, and it's plenty accurate.

I've been looking at guys on the net taking long range shots and thought I got to have a go at that, told you I'd been bitten. :)
I at first put a deposit on a Scorpyd Velocity 165 which a shop over here had due to a customer pulling out, he doesn't stock them normally. It was impulse really, I got to thinking and researching hard and eventually decided to cancel that idea and switch to a Excalibur Matrix 405.
I chose that over the 380 as it will be used for long range target only, (unless I get over the pond to try my hand at bowhunting one day,) so I've got that extra bit of velocity which will help.

That's why I'm here, to pick your collective brains, I hope you'll indulge this Brit! :)

It will be here tomorrow and I'm like a kid at Christmas, any tips when it arrives guy's?

I've been using ML6 silicon string wax on the GT Flex string which I had for the compound, and I've found that it likes dry PTFE lube sprayed on a rag and rubbed on the rail, makes it really slick and does not attract dust, would the same treatment be ok on the Matrix?

I can hit a round RH 9" Xbow unloader hanging from a tree limb consistently at 80 yrds, 100yrds not quite so consistent, standing offhand with the GT Flex which pushes a 385gr GT laser ii out at 295fps, I'm hoping to eventually push that range out to 300yrds bench rested with the Matrix. I've seen 275yrds done with a 380 so I guess it's possible.

Sorry for the long first post, I'm somewhat excited by the prospect!

Welcome to the Forum, congrats on yer GT Flex, Matrix 405 & 380 & 355 are more than i can hand cock. I have to use a rope aid, i don't own either the 405 nor the 380, they are more than i wanted to pull up on. I have the 355, its good fer what i need it for.

Welcome to the forum . you will be hard press to find a better or more knowledgable bunch when it comes to crossbows .

have shot the Gt Flex a while back . Nice bow being able to change draw weight was a nice option , especiall you had you g ones getting into archery .

You will be hard pressed to beat an Excalibur crossbow . Have used them since 1992 , they are near bulletproof . On the occasion you do have trouble they do their best to fix things up .

Let us know how you like your Excal once your up and shooting . If you have question about your new bow you have come to the right place .

welcome to the forum and congrats on the Big Boy Bow! you will love it im sure. There are two sides to the string wax one says yes one no. i use a little on the serving of Daltons or Dons aka Boo wax. Then every 20 30 shots i rub the serving to redistribute the wax.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. :)

Well the bow arrived today, a little too late to get out with it.
I robbed the Hawke XB30 off my Gt Flex, I like that scope better than the Twilight DLX especially as I read somewhere the Excalibur scope is not nitrogen filled and waterproof, seems strange, is that correct ??
It rains a lot in Wales, a scope that could fog is a big NO NO, I'll move it on and get another XB30 if that is the case.

My first impressions are good, very good. Fit and finish great, size compared to the GT Flex is great, shorter and narrower plus lighter, I can see why the Matrix is popular among hunters.

A bit of a shock cocking it for the first time, phew! The cocking rope was too long for me, shortened it now so it will be better tomorrow I feel, I'm not comfortable enough yet to un-cock it by hand. Pulled it almost to the DFI and it feels better, no doubt I'll get the knack before long and my muscles will get the message. .......... I can cock the Flex by hand at 180lbs so I should be ok. No georgiaboy I'm not going to try doing this by hand, it'd be like trying to up route a tree !

First shot at close range, damn this things quick!! And straight away decided to get the arrow puller! Went in my boss right up to the fletching, so need a better high velocity target really.

The trigger is very different, the Flex has a progressive trigger with no discernible stop before breaking, a surprise release so to speak, which I don't mind, I'm used to a surprise break shooting Vert compound.
This Matrix has a short travel which is smooth, stop, then breaks like glass, impressive!

I can already truthfully say I'm glad I chose this over the Scorpyd, I am normally an exponent of the KISS principle, I forgot it only for a short while thankfully.

I think I'll stick with my Dry PTFE rubbed on the rail, already it's slicker than it was, I found it gets even better after several applications. I think I'll try that Scorpion Venom serving lube also, anyone tried it?
I'm a little wary of putting wax on the serving lest it get into the trigger mech. If you guys do it I'm sure it's fine, but .......

Just a couple of questions to get me right for the off.

Brace height is stated as 1" in the .pdf doc I downloaded from Ecalibur, it came at 5/8, no doubt stretch in storage, but I read you're bracing at 3/4", what is the reason for that ??
I've set it at 7/8" at the mo knowing it will need shooting to settle down.

Secondly, are you hooking under or over the string using the rope ?
Tenpoint state it should be under with the Flex, Excalibur don't seem to say one way or the other so I'm guessing it's personal taste?

I'll be out on the fields tomorrow so I'll give you more of my thoughts soon, so far it's lookin good. ........ If it equals the Flex for accuracy I'll be very happy, it'll beat it when I push out to 200yrds + .... I'd have to aim at the moon to get the Flex out that far.

What velocity are you getting with 400gr bolts? ............ I'll chrono it tomorrow, will be nice to compare.

I hook facing down, just like the video on this site. I'm glad to hear that you like the stock trigger too! Welcome to the forum, and enjoy the best crossbow's made! I do recommend carefully removing one screw at a time on the scope mount, and a drop of removable thread locking solution. We have Locktite here in the US, product Blue 242. Great stuff, and the shock on the bow will eventually work them screws loose!
Good Luck, be safe, and have fun! 8)
