As I posted on another thread, I bought 200 lbs of minerals a couple days ago to put out on our club. Mixed up a 50 lb batch this morning and me and a buddy headed out this morning to check out some existing mineral licks and put the new recipe out in some select locations. Saw three snakes while we were riding the four wheelers...one was a black racer about 6 ft long, let him go. Ran across a chicken snake later on, let him go too. Then on the trail to the last site, I stopped to wait on my buddy, he had stopped to check some deer tracks in a rutted out wash. While sitting there on my 4 wheeler I looked off the trail to my right, about 10 feet off the trail I saw something I wasnt sure what it was... looked like maybe a bleached out branch laying in the grass, or maybe a snake? Got off the ATV, pulled my pistol and walked up to a *big* honkin' rattlesnake laying there. Got him right behind the head with my 45... 11 rattles and a button, this was a big dude, definitely would put a hurtin' you! We had a couple coolers with lots of, umm... ice in them, so we got him cooled off quick. He's in the freezer, got another hatband or two to make now!

That is one big bugger and gives me the goose bumps seeing you hold it. Have those snake chaps been useful yet?

Knock on wood Norm, never had to actually put them to the test yet , and hope I never do! But they do give you a little more confidence to get off into the woods this time of year. I assure you I wouldnt walk up to a big snake like this without them!

I have never seen a rattle snake here in CT but we do have some timber rattlers. I do run into Copperheads from time to time.

Curious . What type is that one ?
It's a timber rattler, also called a canebrake rattler in some parts. This one is a lot lighter color than any other I've seen around here though.
Non-poisonous snakes I let go on their merry way, I just don't like the kind that bite!
