Alan picked out a Quilted Maple blank which is a very interesting wood grain wise. The grain sort of weaves in and out hence the name Quilted. You are never sure which way the grain is going. Of course there are Pluses and minuses to this being that you may run into a grain running in the wrong way on a sort wood span making it weak where you want strength. the good thing is the grain is outstanding and I believe outweighs the its faults.
The two pics shows the blank on one side with lots of Quilting going on and the second pic is the flip side and it shows fairly calm grain. Its like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get till you take a bite.

This one after I rough cut in out of the blank.

Next I need to get one side flat and then run it through the planer to get both side flat and parallel. Then join the edges to make them square and straight.
