I was in a muskie tournament last Saturday out of Bell River (Lake St Clair). We caught 9 of them. The biggest one we caught was about 46 inches. What a day! I do this every year and after this tournament I know its now time for Deer Season. My wife hates this time of year for some reason.
Hey another Muskie hunter. I'm going Muskie fishing tomorrow at Balsam Lake. I caught a nice 39 incher last Tues. My largest to date. We have boated one at 48 inches one at 47 inches. The rest were in the mid thirties. If you want some tips on Balsam just PM me.
Nice one Shakky. My best was50 and5/8ths. It won 2nd place 2yrs ago. Lake St Clair is full of Muskie. I have pictures but don't really have the means to send them.
Thats one big fish. 50 inches to 54 inches is about the best I could hope for in the Kawartha's. What's the biggest you could hope for out of Lake St.Clair?
Let me correct that Shakky. It was 51 and5/8ths. I would say 54would be about right for Lake St Clair. Two weeks ago there was a 40 pounder caught but I didn't hear the length on it. This I do know, ever since the zebra mussels infested this lake, they cleared the water up which allowed a huge increase in the weed growth. That was perfect for the muskie population. The lake is full of them now. The diehard muskie fishermen think a 50 lb fish could be caught in the next few years.
It was a very good fight. It always surprises me how some small fish will fight and you think you have a large fish on and some large fish come in nice as can be. My Muskie before this one came in very easy until he saw the boat then it was a different story but really not much on a fight. He was 35inches. This one went nuts right from the start. I knew I had a good size fish on. I thought he would be bigger then he was based on the fight. It took me at least 10 minutes to bring him back to life but he swam away fine.
Nice fish shakky. I've heard lake st.clair is full of them as well. I've never had the chance to fish there. I just caught my first 2 musky ever this past canada day. We didn't have any tape or scale but we estimated them at around 20 and 25 pounds. What a day for me, i was dumbfounded. The first one, the smaller one came jumping out of the water 3 times - awesome. The 2nd, larger one came in like a log until he saw the boat, then went off like a bat outta hell - even smashed off the bottom of the boat. They were out of lake scugog, on the ceseria side. I do have pics but not on digital. If i ever find a scanner i will post them. From now on, I bring my digital.
Go for it Shakky. The technique on St Clair is plainer boards. The best lures are the Artifacts. Speed.... 4.5 - 4.8mph. Time of day...any time. Anything else you want to know give me a shout. I'm not a pro but the guy I go with is.
Just one more thing to add. Last Saturday when we caught 9 muskie, we had 16 hits for the day. We fished from 8am to 8pm (long day). I would do it again in a heart beat. bI honestly think it's the best Muskie fishing lake in the world.
