Replacing a Fletching

Post by FireFly »

As I have mentioned before, I'm a noob. This past weekend, I shot off a fletching on one of my Fire Bolt Arrows. I've gone through a LOT of posts on this forum concerning fletchings and got a lot of help, but wasn't able to glean out how to replace a single fletching on the Fire Bolt.
Can I use any fletching that is 4" in length and real close to the height of the fletchings already on the Cross Bolt? Should I remove all the fletchings on the Cross Bolt and put all the same brand names on it? Should I remove all the fletchings and put something different like length and/or cut on my Cross Bolts? Should I throw my Fire Bolt away? (NOT  )
Also, I'm sorry I'm asking a question that has probably been answered somewhere else in the forum, but I'm just not finding it.
Any help would be appreciated.

yes you can replace only one without replacing all of them.

I am new to the forum, but have assembled lots of arrows and just made my first set of BE Zombies.

I have never just done a single fletch... it is just too easy to replace them all. Xbow bolts have a more aggressive offset than typical compound bow arrows. I would think it would be difficult to do without a jig. Depending on your situation, I would just bite the bullet and get the few supplies you need. Eventually you can build your own arrows from scratch.

If you want, this is what I would get to get started:

Fletching removal tool:http://www.eders.com/product.php?produc ... 7AodSAQAzQ

-you can use a razor if you want... but much prefer this tool.

A jig: I prefer the bitzenburger, you can get the crossbow reciever to go with it. I would get both the straight and right heilical clamps

Then you just need fletching glue and the fletchings of you your choice

After I strip my fletchings, I may clean them up a tad with some scotchbrite and then wipe them with 91% denatured alcohol.

I use a bitzenberger for my compound arrows but much prefer the Arizona EZ Fletch
Bolt for my crossbow arrows. If you're starting I suggest the 2" blazer veins instead of the 4" veins. Less drag and wind drift. Also, you can't beat the Bolt for ease of fletching one or all the veins. Jmo. :D

Yep, the EZ Fletch Bolt will allow a consistent single fletching replacement easier than anything else.

I replace one at a time but I did all mine on a single fletching jig. I put white fletch with it strait up then turn jig to which one fell off as I always start my arrows the same when fletching them. Stock arrows would be tougher to do as you likely would not get it lined exactly perfectly centred and same angle. Should not make a whole lot of difference at short hunting ranges. Best bet is invest in a fletch jig and do all your arrows as you will eventually have to unless you send them off to someone or get a store to do it.

Ask cdn.redneck as he always ruins his fletching on my nice targets. Pop off left and right and sometimes even left inside my butt stops.

Where are you located? If you're anywhere near KW i can give you a hand and/or let you use my jigs.

Yep,what Boo said. I have used the EZ Bolt to fletch just one blazer or all three. If you are going to shoot on a regular basis, get yourself an Arizona Ez Bolt and some Blazer vanes.

Thank you for everybody for your responses. This forum is awesome. I have purchased an EZ Fletch Bolt, a Zip Strip, and 2" Blazer Vanes along with some glue.
Thanks for offering your services VixChix. I'm just too far from you but appreciate the offer.
Also, there were a lot of good advice on how to prepare the arrows.
Thanks a lot everybody.
