Wes, if i had more vacation time left for this year, i would be making plans! Thanks for the offer. Maybe next year, I'll meet Mr. Hall in Kentucky, and we'll ride out together for a few days. I'd be happy to share a nice steak dinner with you guys, and heck, there are a few more guys on here from Va. as well. I took a lot of days for my mother, and my wife for medical reasons this year, but I would not have had that any other way!
Good luck this fall Wes!

Re: Not good news
Forty years ago I hunted in the thumb area of Michigan and I literally had thousands of acres I had permission to hunt on, now I hunt public land up north only. I used to help the farmers during haying season and actually all during the year with anything they needed help with. Now most of them have died and their farms were split and sold. The people buying the small parcels up won't allow hunting to anyone. My success on big bucks has dropped considerably but I still enjoy the big woods and the challenges associated with it. Just don't kill the deer like I did back then. You will adapt just like I did. Good luck.

I would be happy to fill the freezer with tasty venison, and a respectable buck is all I'm after these days, I won't miss a trophy buck though if the shot presents! I enjoy hunting public land too, if you know where the pressure is, you can count on the push to you most times!
Enjoy, and good luck this fall MH.

Re: Not good news
Same here in southern Indiana, had permission for years to hunt about 10,000 acres here from local farmers, and Kimball International that owned about 26,000 acres of woods in Indiana and KY, and for various reasons lost it all as it was sold, couple of law suits on farmers by hunters that had accidents trying to get over on the farmers, as no law suit for their accidents ever made it thru court but the farmers won't let anybody on their land now and can't blame them. So many postings in the local news papers now of No Tresspassing on various owners of land is shooting up more and more as well. The farmers here are getting now as much as 28.00 per acre to lease and that is the norm now also. Public land is getting more and more crowded too. Saw a 6 pt buck (little one) at 7pm come out in the grassy corner of my yard this evening. Glad I got couple of thousand acres still to hunt around the house even tho its all public and did put 4 does in the freezer last year as I let a bunch of smaller bucks go, chasing the biggies. Protect and respect your landowners if you have permission to hunt as its all changing everyday and getting more ugly as time marches on. Happy hunting!Michiganhunter wrote:Forty years ago I hunted in the thumb area of Michigan and I literally had thousands of acres I had permission to hunt on, now I hunt public land up north only. Re: Not good news
I've found public land to be rewarding during archery and sometimes downright scary during firearms season. Your $$$ helped fund it so why not use it?!
I have 2 public tracts close to the house that I archery hunt through the week after work and typically see nice deer in.

Yep, archery season can be very productive on public land. I'm only a little bummed over the situation. Heck, LaSalle is 35 minutes away, and gets little pressure early on.

Re: Not good news
Well, my buddy came through! I get to hunt this spot about 15 minutes away during the early season. I can use an Urban Tag too, but must take a doe first! I have no issue with that what so ever! The owner, and his son are meat hunters, and don't care if we take any buck we want, BONUS! I told him I would give him my first doe if he wants the meat. We have to wait until the last week of September though, they want to have first dibs on deer. Saweeeet!
