Turkey Hunting with the Nightmare 335

Post by amythntr »

....haven't turkey hunted in years...this year will be the year I get back into it...I am familiar with what to do (calling, decoys, etc.)...

....I am planning on using my Nightmare 335 8) this year...it will be the first time hunting turkey with a crossbow....

....My query to the University Professors is do you have separate setups for turkey than you do deer; in terms of arrow length, weight, BH, vanes, etc?...If you do, I would be curious to hear about it so I can do some daydreaming and make some decisions before the season is upon us (first step has been done-my new bare shaft ZS's just arrived)...Thanks,

Anthony :)

This will be my first year also hunting turkey with a crossbow, but have hunted turkey a lot of years with a compound and shotgun, and with the compound I changed nothing, back then I use to shoot nap 100 grain spit fires and they worked fine.. now maybe there are, I'm sure there are others who might use other heads, and as for actual turkey hunting, I believe the turkeys best defense is his eyes, so I think camo and being as still as possible is a key, and the calling, set up, I'm looking forward to it, and hope you are successful as always keep us posted.......

On my vertical bows...yes.
actually have a dedicated turkey bow.

But I will be taking the micro out a time or two for birds.

Only thing I may do.different is the broadhead.

For deer, I use a slick trick 125 On the front of a zombie with brass insert.

I think I'm gonna use the quills with a 100 gr spitfire max....a turkey is the only thing I will use an expandable on...and I want to lighten the whole set up to get a little flatter trajectory.

....I knew that was coming Mike...I earned and deserved it    ...but like Mr Meat says, "those turkey's will be coming in just to take a closer look at the Nightmare 335" along with my black sunglasses...and when they do...I will Spitfire them to the MAXX!!

Anthony :)

...thanks for your responses so far...glad to hear that the Spitfire is used...and for the most part it is the same setup!

....I can think of one part of the setup will have to change...my "pank" fletching will have to be replaced....by a more conservative color scheme....

...of course I was thinking of using Black to match the Nightmare 335 8) ....

i kill three or four every fall with my exomax,i use 100 grain swackers they work fine, the key is good shot placement, there kill zone is little, like sew said if you can shoot them in the center of the back and get there spine and through there vitals, they die almost instantly.this is my favirite shot too.if you shoot one broadside look at there leg,go up were the base of the wing starts, shoot through there get there vitals plus try to take out a wing or two,the more of it you can break down the better.usually i wait for a relly good shot were i know this will happen, there will be no watching them fly or run off, this past fall was one of the few times were i killed one that the shot wasnt that good(it was a little far and real windy) i shot a bearded hen and when i hit it it made that loud smack as its been hit, there were about eight turkeys with it,they all flew including the one i hit.i watched as they flew off and lost site of which one i hit as the bow recoiled and they flew so quick.i was watching them go out of site when one was just clearing a pine it just folded up in mid air,and came crashing through the tree,it had a big gash that was down close to were its tail and wings meet.if it had made it on further it would have been hard to find,so hitting the vitals is key.as far as the nightmare goes you should be fine, just dont move!!!,they pick up movement better than any critter out there let them walk behind something if you have to move, and make sure no other turkey is looking at you.it only takes one to get spooked, make that dreaded putting sound and its game over quick! turkey huntings my favorite by far,the first time i went many years ago i was hooked instantly..good luck this spring. :D paitence is what kills turkeys...

Good luck on the turkey hunts > I've pretty well used what ever bolt/broad head combo I had in he quiver > shot placement is critical because they don't blood trail like a whitetail !

Here is a copy/paste post from 2014 when I took a nice Tom with an old model Relayer > Aluminum 2216 with Wasp Broadhead .
Set up along a cut trail boardering Cedar swamp this am ( Hardwoods to my East and West , swamp behind me , South ) .

6:30 am a nice tom travelling alone comes North from the freshly planted corn field ... he come in silent but struts and gobbles like crazy when he see's my decoy .

Long story short ... @ 15 yards while he is focused on my hen decoy , I let fly a 2216 with 130 gr Wasp broadhead . Shooting slightly uphill and East . Good hit !

He flap / runs North East and I find him 35 yards stone dead in the field .

24lbs , 10inch beard , 1 1/4 spurs ... a real nice mature tom .

What an awsome morning hunt ... A great start to a very busy day > Heading to Lindsay Ontario. to visit with my Daughter > She is in a Fish and Wildlife program at Sir Sandford Fleming College > Then heading to Toronto for dinner and Vaughn Bass Pro to shop for some insulated waders she needs for an Electrofishing study course ... Will put a lot of KM's on my Tacoma today !

Good Luck to all that are chasing Turkeys thru till the end of our Ontario season !

I go from a 1 1/8th G5 Striker to a 1 1/2" Striker Magnum. They don't go far so I haven't seen the need for Zwickey Scorpio Grapplers/Small Game Getters

I thought of trying a Gobbler Guillotine on a long arrow out of my Micro or Vortex. What do you think?

I use the same set up that I use for deer. Only thing I do different is that I use a muzzy grasshopper behind my muzzy mx3. Helps me find my arrow.
