opening morning doe with Exomax
I arrowed a nice doe at 7:30 this am.
10 yards double lung/heart.
virtually no blood trail, but I found her fairly quickly because I heard where she crashed down.....more details and pics later - gotta get to work!
edited: now for the REST of the story.
I got into my stand before 6:00am and gave the woods lots of time to settle down. I was a long way from the crop field so I knew the deer would be undisturbed. I almost always have deer by this stand, but usually later, around 9:00am.
At 7:30 I heard rustling behind me and a couple branches popped...too big for a squirrel! I turned slowly to my left and saw a fawn followed by a decent doe. Since the second tag makes a doe mandatory, I really didn't even give it a second thought. I knew I would take her if she gave me the shot. The fawn came right under my stand and didn't catch any scent, and then he continued on. The doe followed in his footsteps and when she was directly beneath me I thought about spining her but decided to let her move on instead. She turned and took 5 steps, then turned broadside! I called it 10 yards but it was more likely 5. I centered her ribcage on the left and the arrow exited low on her right side, right where her elbow connects. PERFECT! (who could miss that shot??)
She blew out of there and I watched her maybe 50 yards and then I lost her but heard her crash down seconds later. After making a couple calls, the fawn came back. I took out the camera and tried to take a few pictures....the batteries were dead! This thing EATS batteries!!
Anyway, I turned off the flash and the LCD display and used the viewfinder and the camera let me take his single picture before shutting down again. I snorted at him, raised my arms, and finally had to lower the crossbow to the ground in front of him to get him to go away....man they are dumb!
POOR blood trail this time. I couldn't find ANY blood between the arrow and my last sighting! I did a grid search where I heard her crash down and immediately found her. I backtracked on the blood for 20 yards and it petered out completely. This has me baffled, I had a perfect vital hit and an exit hole as low as you can get and no blood!
Here are the few shots I took...the blood shown was the BEST I could find...the rest was just a drop here and there.
added bonus - I found the pruning saw I lost last summer! What are the odds?
