one heck of an opening day
Friday I was on leave as planned a month before. Morning dark found me in Lanark ready to open the season alone, since my buddy had to work.
I walked into the appointed bush through sparse brush and a high overhead canopy, found my log and hunkered in behind it. The southwest wind was perfect. For the next four hours I sat without seeing a thing. At 11:00 I got up and walked behind a cedar thicket to catch some sunshine and out bolts this little doe, not 30 yards from where I had been sitting. No shot possible. Just me standing there with my mouth open and arms limp.
Afternoon, after a nap at home, I felt much better. I met my buddy after work and we got into our stands at 4:30. Much to long a wait I thought, and the wind was rocking that tree something fierce. every gust made me look down for reassurance that it was not too far to fall, if necessary, although I was well tied in. With a +- 6:40 sunset, it was getting duckish when I heard the happy twang-thunk from my buddies direction, and smiled. He does not fire in vain. Not five minutes later, I spied this brown hide emerging from the dense bush and proceed towards the trail above which I was sitting. A welcome plump spike buck. The arrow hit him just beside the spine and through the right lung. He spun, jumped and lay down within 10 yards of my tree, took two breaths and expired right there. No waiting those agonizing suspense filled 30 minutes this time. I untied my harness, hurried dowwwwn the tree and secured my prize with a hug and a prayer of thanks. Knowing my buddy had shot, and in failing light, I hallooed him and went to find he had arrowed a fine doe, which also fell within sight. No late night tracking for this crew, for which I was ever so thankfull. For that is a source of concern for me. As it was, we congratulated each on our good fortune before the cutting and cooling. What luck, and what a rush. A happy day for sure and an awsome start to the season.
They're out there boys. Go get 'em.

Great start to the season Maple. I'm not sure how you could top that.
