Here are a few pic's of my Monday morning success. I was finally able to cross path's with this guy within crossbow range. I had originally seen him prior to the season, then watched him helplessly on opening day from 150 yards away, and then watched him again last night trot by me a 60 yards. I went back this morning, had 5 little does all around me at the edge of the soy field (one within 20 yards, but I passed on her..thank goodness!). Once they were all done trying to figure out what I was, blowing and stomping around I proceeded to continue walking the edge of the field. I had no longer walked about 30 yards and I saw a set of horns through the field grass to my right. He was looking in my direction from about 50 yards, but didn't know exactly what was going on (he likely heard the does blowing and running all over the place). I hunkered down behind a big old maple tree, and after 5 minutes him and the little 5 pointer he was travelling with proceeded to come out to the edge of the soy bean field about 30 yards from where I was. This guy began walking in my direction, diagonally out into the field a bit more. I had the maxzone on him the entire time, and when I felt comfortable with his range, I gave a quick whistle to freeze him, then let loose with the shot.
He ran about 40 yards with the arrow still stuck in his shoulder. Initially I wasn't sure how well I hit him, but once I went to where he had been standing, I knew it was good. There was dark red blood...and lots of it, all over the place on the beans.
Hopefully there are more out there where he came from. Good luck to the rest of you this year!
