Spring, IMO, he did the right thing, but I also can see your point.
I think it would be a personal decision of the person at the scene, and would not judge them harshly for going either way, except of course if they chose to shoot the live one

That guy had guts going in close to the elk like that. I would have passed!
I read about a guy that killed a buck several years ago that was carrying the rack and head of another deer up on top of his rack. They were all locked together. I'd bet that was a stinking mess to deal with.
Our local taxidermist did a mount of two bucks locked together that were both found dead. Instead of being head on, they were kind of side by side. He mounted them so they hung in the corner of a room, with one deer on each wall. Both big 10 pointers, and it was pretty impressive.
