I shake uncontrolably, and I can hear my heart ticking when I open my mouth, he has to know I'm here.
Sunday morning, I went to a new area to catch my buck. I was planning on watching over a neighbour's lawn. Their summer cottage has been vacant for more than a month now, and I know the deer visit them regularly.
I was at their house at 5:00 am and in the dark, I couldn't find a suitable ground stand, so I layed down and napped until dawn. In the dim light of the early morn, I ended up standing behind a wood pile about 5 feet high, 8 feet wide and 3 rows deep. It was right beside the house, and a large Christmas tree hide me from the bush on the right. Anything to the left was wide open except for a few apple trees. I placed my Vixen on top of the wood pile and slumped beside it. Less than 10 minutes later, to my right, I heard the exciting crunching of dried leaves. I peered through the Christmas tree branches and saw a young buck approaching. I ducked behind the wood and listened for him to step infront. He did not, but I could hear his steps clearly, and they were getting closer. I peeped my head above the wood pile to see him. He was a couple of yards from the wood still walking toward me. I started to shake, first my leg and then my hand that was holding the bow. I was shaking the bow and I just knew the buck was watching it. My head was low enough for him not to see me. I had to stop shaking! I heard him step again, and thought go for it. I stood up, his head was down, but I could barely see his back. He was too close to the wood pile and I could not see over it. I climbed to my tip toes and still could not get the front of the bow low enough. Silently I pulled back behind the wood. I heard him walking again and I raised myself to aim and fire. He was walking almost straight away from me at 5 yards. I was a wreck still shaking and straining to get higher above the wood pile. He wandered behind one of the apple trees and manged to keep it between me and him.
I peeked around the end of wood pile and watched him move out of range. I was exhausted. The buck was 4 feet away and I couldn't get a shot off.
To close to shoot!!!
