Looking good at 20 yards..
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.

Do the blades clear the stirrup? Or do you use a longer arrow that hangs out past the end?

I'm using a 20" arrow. It sits past the stirrup...Square_hammer wrote:Do the blades clear the stirrup? Or do you use a longer arrow that hangs out past the end?

Not with the magnus. 20 yards will be max with these heads. In hoping to get one in within 15 yards..mr meat wrote:Have you shot farther then 20 Jeff!

Re: magnus bull heads
Good shot on a target that the head is not moving. lol
My question is why not just use the broad heads you use for deer and take the body shot?
I shoot them in the body, and have not had a problem. If it's because you feel you ruin the bird with a body shot, the only good part of a wild turkey is the breast's and maybe the legs, and only if you cook them for 8 hrs. in a slow cooker.

Re: magnus bull heads
The beauty of the magnus is its like black and white. If I connect the bird will be DRT. If I miss then I extend my season for another day. Nothing wrong with a body shot however I don't want to chase a wounded bird for miles in case I miss the sweet spot...catclr wrote:Good shot on a target that the head is not moving. lol

The problem is, if you don't have it already it will come, and that will be a call shy Gobbler. It's the same as going out before season and calling in birds to see them.
As for chasing a wounded bird, you have that with fellows using a shotgun, and either not pattering or guessing the wrong distance on the bird, and them saying I rolled a big gobbler but he got away. NO REASON FOR THIS!!!!
I have hunted turkeys since 1958 and spring gobblers since 1968 when Pa. had their first season. In 1968 you could call a gobbler from one ridge top to another. Today if you hear a gobbler across the valley, you go after him, or hope one starts gobbling in the area where you are, because that gobbler across the valley is not coming to you.
Well are season open April 29, so have to get to scouting. I wish you luck with whatever you use, and the turkey holds his head still. Just be safe.

Re: magnus bull heads
I've shot a bunch with the crossbow in the body and then I started shooting them in the head with a bullhead not sure why u think it's harder than body shot. Body looks big but in reality vitals are about the same size as the head. If you can hit the body vitals without a problem u should be able to hit the head too. I found it much easier to just shoot them in the head then trying to decide at what angle and where to aim for the body which changes if in strut or some other position. As far as birds being call shy because of being called too either before or during season well thats another argument that don't agree with.
Re: magnus bull heads
Well since your profile does not say where your from, I can't say for your state per say. But I can say for Pa. & NY that pressure before season and during season does effect the calling of gobblers. The use of crow calls and owl calls are the same way. They get use to those sounds coming from the same spots or area and they will stop answering those calls. I have seen this happen in both Pa. and NY., over the 49 yrs. of spring gobbler hunting.Timbrhuntr wrote: As far as birds being call shy because of being called too either before or during season well thats another argument that don't agree with.

Re: magnus bull heads
I totally agree that pressure does affect them and cause them to move etc but not just calling by itself.
Re: magnus bull heads
A turkey (gobbler) that hears calling from an area and responds by simply showing up expects to find other turkeys. If they come and there is nothing there they will quit responding after it happens a time or two. On the other hand if they show and there is a human they see they will avoid that area for quite a while and even if they are answering calls they will not come in. And they do quit responding to owl and crow calls if overused especially if the calls come from the same places repeatably. Sometimes it is best to just sit back and listen and wait for a bird to gobble on his own.
