Yesterday morning was my first hunt from a new tree I found 2 weeks ago. It's only about 25 yards from my previous spot but I hoped it would have me better positioned to get a shot. I was seeing deer from the other tree but they were always behind the thick stuff where I couldn't shoot. I rode my bicycle in to the spot and was in the tree and ready 10 minutes before shooting time. It was opening day of duck season and as soon as shooting time arrived they started shooting.
The morning was going by with no deer activity. I was doing some blind grunting and had put out some wicks with doe in heat and buck urine. At about 8:50 I looked up and saw this buck about 70 yards out looking in my direction. I turned on my bow-mounted camera and took the bow's safety off. I wasn't thinking and flipped the safety up hard so it clicked. He looked toward me for a minute then relaxed and started coming in. While he was walking I could see there was something odd about his right antler.
He came straight to me and finally saw me at 13 yards. He did the head bob and I took the shot since I knew he was about to run. He fell back, dropped, and didn't get back up. I got down and found him to be a 7 point. I rode the bike back to my truck, got my 4-wheeler, came back and got him. I shot him with my Matrix 380 and a BEE with an X-Act broadhead.
