Ron sorry to hear that !! The best breed on the planet. mine is now 10 and has had a bad left acl for the last 4 years limps around when she first stands up. I started a new pup this fall and when they play together you wouldn't know her leg hurts until they are done screwing around. Good luck I cant live without a lab.

We spent $3000 saving a beagle from 3 blockages in bowel. Phoned us at 12:30 in the morning saying he was dying and they had vets all set to go if we wanted to go ahead. He was in the vets for a week. Vet wanted a lot more and we negotiated price down and put it on payments. Vets you can negotiate prices and they have never said no. Laser surgery on my Bloodhound they wanted $1500 and I told them I could only come up with $600 and they said that was fine and they went ahead and did the surgery. Have animals you got to expect expenses. Not saying you should or should not, I am saying their are alternatives. CHEERS!
Re: Good bye my friendly companion.
I am not judging anyone, but being so young were all options exhausted? My wife is a vet technician and she comes home daily with stories of animal owners not being able to afford expensive surgeries. I do not know all the answers but I know sometimes the owners given up the pet and the hospital does the work and adopts out the animal. And many, many times the hospital works with people as the above poster said to do what they can financially. My wife's has some kind of "care credit " thing that people can pay monthly on.
We had an expensive tough decision to make on our beloved lab 2 yrs ago for a back surgery. The deciding factor for me was my lab was 12 and the vet said he wouldn't recover very well at that age. At 3 I would have done it. Again, I'm not judging anyone, it's just so sad when we have to say goodbye. Especially at a young age .

Re: Good bye my friendly companion.
My thoughts are with you that is a tough one.
Here is a poem I like
Message From Valhalla
You were with me to the very end and even after I had "gone" you held me, and as my soul left my body and I looked down and saw you crying, I wanted so much to tell you that I understood. You did this for me.
I tried to tell you in my own way that it was time for me to leave, and I thank you for understanding. No other will take my place, but those I left behind will need your love and affection as I have had.
You still think of me, and there are times you try to hide your tear-filled eyes....but please...be happy and think not of sadness, but of how I made you happy and made you laugh at the funny and smart things I did.
There are no fences in Valhalla, for no one has the desire to "dig out".
There are no thunderstorms in Valhalla, therefore fear is never present.
There are no fights in Valhalla. Everyone is congenial.
There is no hunger. There is no thirst. There is much to explore. Many of us who are older take care of the little ones and guide them. It's fun watching them run with their ears flopping and their curly tails wagging.
We have four seasons in Valhalla, and most of us agree, winter is our favorite.
So you see, my loved one, I am very happy...
When it comes time for my friends to leave, I will meet them at the gates of Valhalla, and I will acquaint them with this beautiful and serene place, and I will take care of them for you.
Thank you for loving me, caring for me, and having the courage to let me go with dignity.

Re: Good bye my friendly companion.
Really sorry to read about your Chocolate Lab. My Chocolate female died 3 yrs ago from a stomach tumor. The vet told me they could operate ($4500) but just like yours could not guarantee it would be successful. She lasted another year before dying one month short of 10 years old. I just had to have my Yellow Male put down on Wednesday of Christmas week because of hip displasa. He was 15 yrs old..... talk about hard to do, after having him 15 yrs it just about broke my heart......I will own no more dogs. I'm 65 yrs old and each time I loose one it gets harder on me.

So sorry for you and the sad task you have to do. Other than losing a child, having to put down a pet is one of the hardest things we, as humans, have to do. I always think of my 5 year old Springer and think...I hope I go first. That’s how much we love our true companions. Prayers being sent to get you through.
