Two Way Radios
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a pair of good Two Way Radios (Walkie Talkies). I need a radio with an honest 5 mile range through trees and open fields. My son and I hunt two separate farms and we’d like to be able to talk to each other. I know some Radios advertise a 36 mile range but then you read the reviews and they say your lucky to get 2 miles.
Re: Two Way Radios
Look at the Midland GXT 550 series. Mine are antiques, bought them in 2001, and they have been upgraded since then. Mine said 14 mile range, and we tested them at 8 miles without issue.
We use text on our cell phones now for the last 7 years or so, and I would have to dig for the old radios. LOL!

Re: Two Way Radios
Is it a matter of cell phone reception? If not .....why bother. I have found walkie talkies useful in a deer drive (everyone can talk without a delay)

I don’t know where everyone lives and hunts but here in WI it’s illegal to use walkie talkies or any type of 2 way radios to tell anyone about deer movement or deer activities in any area! Yes even on your own private property! Cell phones can be used for pictures of harvest, but never any type of deer movement or activities! Good luck!

Re: Two Way Radios
I personally like Motorola because of the turn knob for power . Had Midlands and they would turn off in your pocket or go to scan function .
Cell phones are okay for unimportant conversation but for instant answer or info . Radio can not be beat !!!

Motorola CLS 1413 are getting cheaper. I'll check the ones we have at work today, they are bigger and stronger, but the reach out farther

Motorola are the ones we use too. They are much better than the Midlands or Cobras.

Re: Two Way Radios
We don't use radios anymore. We have good cell coverage everywhere we hunt and texting is more reliable and silent. But if radios are what will work for you be aware of a couple of things. FRS radios are all limited to 1/2 watt so their range will be quite limited. GMRS radios can go up to 5 watts though most are limited to 2 watts as anything higher than 2 watts requires a license (in Canada). There are a lot of FRS/GMRS combo radios out there now but with most of them the GMRS channels will have limited power. Best to go with a dedicated GMRS radio.

Old nextel/mike phones used "off the network" have decent range and are cheap.

Re: Two Way Radios
I found that if you go south of the border you are able to find the 5 watt radios. we only carry to 2 watt up here.
Re: Two Way Radios
True but most two radios purchased outside of Canada are not ISED approved therefore technically not legal for use in Canada.Reinyrooster wrote: ↑Tue Jul 02, 2019 5:58 pmI found that if you go south of the border you are able to find the 5 watt radios. we only carry to 2 watt up here.
