Game Camera confusion

Post by Hatchet »

I have had pretty poor luck with game cameras. From 10,000 pictures of fat raindrops, to cameras that somehow let me pass by daily without taking a picture. Can you guys reccomend a good camera that takes pictures reliably. Also what is the best way to view them. I use a card reader and my phone but for some reason the thumbnail pics dont match the actual images. Please keep in mind I have no computer and all this stuff is new to me. Setting up game cameras and knowing your not getting those important pictures is no fun. Thanks

I switched to cellular game cameras about 4 years ago and will never go back! I set my cameras up in the summer and never touch them till after hunting season. No more trips in the woods checking cards for pictures. I just sit back and they upload to the app and I check the pictures on my phone. Last year I switched to the new Moultrie cellular camera and it takes the best pictures that I’ve ever seen on a game camera! My plan is $19.99 for 3000 pictures a month. SpyPoint has a decent camera with unlimited pictures for $15.00 a month but their customer service is awful. I didn’t have good luck with their cameras personally. Good luck!

Format the card to the device. Don’t use the default settings. Use energizer lithium batteries. Cut down all the grass and moving stuff in front of your cameras.I like the bone view card reader. I have some of the older Cabela’s game cams and they are user friendly and work good. But the newer ones are junk. Wildgame innovations makes some good ones .They sure take good pictures. If I buy another it will probably be a moultrie. I use their feeders and they have great customer service and tech support. Buy it well before the season so if you have issues you can get tech support or take it back and get your money back if you get a defective one. I mostly setup to take pictures but have accidentally had it set to video mode so I get some videos :shifty:

I have had a couple of Wildgame innovations cheaper cams and had great luck with them. I got a bushnell 2 christmas's ago and can't find it, ready to put them out. I had a nice Cuddeback about 5 years ago and someone borrowed it and hasn't returned it yet. I quit spending a lot on them.

I am slowly replacing my older bushnells and spypoints with Brownings. I have been running cameras since 2006, when I built my first homebrew with a sony digital camera. I have tried most types and from my experience, Bushnell and Browning are the best bang for your $$$. Some of the Stealthcams are good as well, the G models are pretty good.

I really like Brownings and when they come on sale, like the one at Cabelas right now that is reg $219 on for $129, I buy a couple.

Don't get hung up on Megapixals as they are all 4 mp cameras that add interpolation, which digitally adds megapixels to a photo without actually improving the picture. I run all mine at the 4mp, when I do take pictures, which is native mp and allows you to maximize the number of pictures on your SD card.

I run 90% of my cameras on video, 10 seconds every 2 minutes as I like watching videos.

Try placing them facing a length of trail that allows the sensor to pick up the animal and place some logs or brush on the trail to get the animal to slow down for the pictures. If on a food plot, try to get the camera high, 7-9' and have them angled down. I switched to going high as the elk will slobber all over the camera, bears will bite it and people can see it. Now they are all up higher and angled down. Less detection angle, but, in my opinion, better shots and videos.

I have tried using the phone or another camera to view photos, but I really can't see the details i can on a computer. I just switch SD cards and view the photos at home. You can buy a cheap Chromebook to do the viewing etc.

Go to TrailcamPro.com as they have a wealth of information and they rate the cameras.

And if I was to go to a cellular system, I would never get any work done as I average 400-600/week per camera and I run 16 cameras!

Cheers

I have several game cameras and all work well for pictures and videos except a Covert camera I bought last year that is the worst for videos I have seen. I had ir replaced and the second one is as bad as the first.
But that said I bought on a whim a Wildgame camera from Walmart that was cheap and have found it to take very decent pictures and videos and I am impressed with it. It is still on sale online. One trick, always try to set your cameras up facing north if possible as the rising and setting sun can cause false triggers from bout any game camera.

The Spypoint Micro Link cell cameras have proven to be an essential tool on 3 separate occasions in the last year now. I'll never buy another camera that isn't cell again.

You just need to monitor the battery level on them and they work perfectly.

I run several Moultrie 880i and 990i cameras. They all work pretty dang well if you keep the batteries up. Pictures are clear, lag time is like.07 seconds on shutter speed. Good HD video. These are non-cellular. I'm too cheap to but those. These give me the opportunity to leave the house!!

....I would imagine that $ for $ cellular camera's would work better than non-celluar ones....however, where I hunt, it is not only an hour and a half away BUT there is very poor reception until you go out to the main road, hence I have not even attempted to try them out.

I have a traditional browning that works great. 4 years old And worlds great

I also purchased the new Moultrie cell camera. I have mixed feelings on it. It can take lots of empty pictures. I have also witnessed deer walk right in front of it and no pictures sent... but then some nights I will get 50 or so pics of deer sent to my iPhone. So I’m giving that camera a 2.5 out of 5. I wouldn’t purchase again.

I have an older moultrie and still working great!

In fact on our recent bear hunt a Bear took a bite in to my camera. The motion sensor has a tooth mark in it but stills works great! Lol

I need to get a metal cage for it before next bear season!!! :)

I feel the best thing is trigger time, the shorter the better, my original cuddeback says 1/4 sec. pic, and I believe it as some of those pics were earlier it seems like.

I have Reconyx, Browning & Stealth trail cams and Browning seem to be the best for the cost. All 3 models have failed to capture pics when I have been in the stand and watching the deer. Browning is also good with the AA batteries. I use a PC and/or iPad for viewing the pics and keep a supply of SD cards for cam change out. It is legal to feed the deer in NC and my cams are set to monitor the feeding area where I use the Redneck Post feeders.

Good luck and my suggestions is to get a couple of Brownings from eBay.
