Remove string for off-season ?

Post by Skubasteve »

Hey guys newbie question. Do you guys recommend removing the string from your crossbow for the off-season to relieve tension off the limbs ?

Personal choice I suppose. Some years I do and some I don't.

Nope...but then again I hunt year round down here in Texas. To me it's kind of a moot point.
Like Wheelie said, "personal choice, I suppose".

I guess I should clarify, my crossbow is primarily used for hunting deer in southern Ontario. Our season is from October 1st to December 31. With the season now closed, my bow will be sitting for the next 9 months, unless I do some practice shooting.

Nope, keep the rope cocker on to keep string out of the rubber bumpers.

I shoot my bows all year long so they stay stringed.

I contacted Excalibur and they told me to unstring the bow, but I shoot an old carved limb Excocet.
Call them and ask what they suggest for your bow is probably the best advice.

I remove the string . Same hunting situation as yours. It appears to be a personal choice. Either way it only takes a few minutes if you chose to do so.
If you chose to not remove the string either attach the rope cocker with slight tension to prevent the string from creeping forward digging into rubber bumpers ( learn this the hard way   ).
If you chose to not use the rope cocker in this way then be certain to periodically check otherwise at least monthly.

If you do ! remember to secure the end loops together ( paper clip ) to maintain the the established twist. In my experience all you have to do is carefully remove the clip to prevent any change to the establish twist.
Reinstall and your brace height should be the same as when you removed the string for storage.

As a Note I also prior to removing the string I make sure my POI is good.
Which I see as a chance to take few shoots before the long over winter / Summer storage.

It's all a personal choice. So all good advice. All I will add is if your crossbow is an Exo-series model and has "dissipater pads" make "sure" to remove the rubber pads, otherwise they will be crushed once the string is removed.

What is this “off-season” you speak of? Turkey season starts in about 100 days and 3D shoots start before that! :eusa-dance:
