Most powerful recurve crossbow that can be rope cocked?

Post by crossbownewb440 »

Good day. I'm looking for something simple, yet sophisticated. As the title suggests, what is the most powerful and dependable recurve crossbow that doesn't utilize a crank system?

Several different questions (powerful, dependable), but I'll focus on draw weights:

Matrix 380 @ 260# pull
Micro 315 @ 260#
Axe/Mag 340 @ 270#
Micro 340TD @ 270#
Micro 355 @ 280#
Bulldog 400 @ 280#
Micro360TD @ 285#
Assassin 360 @ 285#
Assassin 420TD @ 290#
Matrix Mega405 @ 290#

I'm nearing 60, and chose 260# as the max I'll be able to rope cock in 10 years. And, the fine folks in this Excalibur forum have most frequently touted Matrix series as being the "best" Excaliburs made. Thus, my decision for Matrix 380 (also own a Vortex :) )

A big factor is your height the taller you are you have an advantage using a rope cocker.
When rope cocking once your hands get to your armpits you lose strength, leverage.
I am 5 ft 5 and I shoot a 350 Matrix and a 340 Micro, both of these bows are at the top end of what I can rope cock , that is why I own them .
It's the most speed I can get out of a x bow and recock in the field with out a crank.
I have a crank and use it all the time unless I am in the field.
It is the length of the pull that determines the bow for me over the poundage.
I can handle the poundage.

Matrix 380, fairly easy to cock, and very hard hitting.

Yep, that or the bulldog380 are probably the best options if you want fast, reliable and rope cockable.

I am mid fifties and 5' 9" tall and have a Mega 405 and my brother-in-law has a 400. No problem rope caulking either. Wouldn't want to do it 10X in row fast or anything but 3 or 4 times to check the scope zero is no problem.

Make sure you use the wrist strap! Discharging is a definite option! It's an awesome bow!

Too bad the folks at Excalibur decided to stop making the BD380. That's a sweet bow! If you can find one, grab it!
