Re: Hooks up or down
Hooks up for no other reason than that's the only way I've always done it.

Re: Hooks up or down
I have always done hooks down and had one hook break on me over the years. I just grabbed another rope cocker, checked my limbs out and went back to shooting. It is just easier IMO to hook them on hooks down.

Re: Hooks up or down
I remember the 1st time mine wanted to drive my Tundra. I ask for a picture I.D, proof of insurance and a $20,000 cash bond!!!
But... Yes Sir, if it's gonna break, it will!!

Re: Hooks up or down
Maybe I should replace the hooks on my C2? I've had it a while now.

Re: Hooks up or down
The old hooks have been improved greatly. They are more robust and have a bridge at the top near the pulleys. Yes, definitely replace them. They probably have worn grooves at the hooks.

Re: Hooks up or down
Bill,
Mine broke a few years back. You could see where it looked like the forming process had caused a void in the material that left an "air pocket". The stress caused the weakest part to give up. After the hook broke, I did develop a splinter on one limb. (This didn't show for about 2 weeks). However, Excalibur DID replace the hooks and the string on the C2 and sent me a new set of limbs with ALL needed hardware!!
That's Customer Service!! (Thanks Dawn!!)
Mr. Bill Maguire sent me a lenght of string he uses on his stuff. A lot thicker than the stuff Excal uses. I put it all together and it works fine.
I don't use my C2, I know there will come a day that if I wanna go hunt, I'll have to use it, but until then, I'll just draw mine by hand!!

Re: Hooks up or down
I used to put my hooks Down. One of the hooks broke on my EXT Crank and "flew up and back" ! When I replaced the hooks, I put the hooks on so they were "UP". I think if they would break in this position, they would have a tendency to go down ? Hope I never find out ! Thanks, HawkeyeMD

Open side up is how I was taught for using chains and cables for vehicle recovery. That way, if the chain/cable or hook breaks it will go down away from you instead of up at you

Have always used hooks down, it works well for me

Re: Hooks up or down
I only rope cock and I don't see what difference hook orientation makes. If those things sometimes break, they should make them out of metal to avoid injuries (and lawsuits).

There is a member on crossbownation who now only has one working eye. Guess which way he now orients the hooks?

Re: Hooks up or down
You will see if you ever have a hook not quite full engaged and especially when decocking. Happed to me. Broke a hook and handle, smacked me pretty good in the hand. Luckily didn't hit anything like an eye.
Hooks made out of metal will wear down the side of the mainframe. The took can have imperfections like Triggertech had in the top of their latches of a few trigger units. That was scary!

This is why we orient the hooks facing UP, This way we don't loose an eye incase it breaks.wheelsquad wrote: ↑Tue Sep 20, 2022 1:53 pmThere is a member on crossbownation who now only has one working eye. Guess which way he now orients the hooks?
