This may help you dog owners
As some of you know, I'm quite busy because of my wife's broken ankle. A couple of days ago I woke up to hundreds of yellow jackets in the house . A day later one of my Mals needed stitches. This morning 2 of my Mals got sprayed by a skunk. I put out some squirrel sized live traps because they are devastating our hazel nut crop and for some reason, a skunk wanted the peanuts and got caught. Every morning I take the Mals out and they check the traps. The traps barely let a skunk in so they can only spray in one direction. Wouldn't you know it, they had to put their nose in in that end of the trap.
So the point. Through life I've had 6 skunks spray my dogs. The first 4 times I got them into my shower and washed them within 15 minutes of being hit. The results were good as you could only smell it when the weather was warm and humid. The last 2 times, I washed them in Scent-A-Way laundry detergent. You can barely smell anything when they're dry. This last time, I used that laundry detergent and Scent Killer spray. There is zero smell except one small spot between his eyes where I didn't wash or spray.
Hope this helps you dog owners!

Yesterday I took my chocolate lab for a run. Wouldn't you know it a skunk popped out of some brush and she started to run towards it. I called her back and the skunk went on its way.
All those hours of recall training were well worth it!!! Lol
If she was sprayed I was far from home and would have had to load her in the truck. I would imagine my truck would have had permanent skunk smell!

Not sure that you can appreciate skunk smell until your pointer gets sprayed and your way home is a Suburban. Might have been a bit of gagging and coughing on that trip.

I wished we lived closer too. I'd love to be able to go with you when you checked your skunk/squirrel traps. I enjoy live entertainment. Can you describe how you released the skunk from the live trap?

My Willy Jo, got skunked 3 yrs. ago, everyone said wash him with tomato
juice so i did and it worked pretty good ,
soak them really good and leave on for about 1 hour
and rinse real good . while they are soaking you have
to hold them so they don't roll most of it off.
just my 2 cents worth

Re: This may help you dog owners
I think someone ask one time, "have ya ever had one of those days?"
Boo it sounds like you've had a month of those days!!
Hope things make a turnaround for you and the Mrs., and the dogs!

Re: This may help you dog owners
That's one way of handling a problem. However, if there's ever another problem like this, throw a blanket over the trap and haul it to your nearest "Leash Only" dog parks. Release the skunk there. The people running the park will thank you. They can't seem to get people to follow the rules about dog leashing.
It's a win/win solution.
