Homemade scent killer
Just sitting here wondering about homemade scent killer. I've made some and used it myself and was wondering if it is as effective as store bought. I believe it works for me but who knows?

Re: Homemade scent killer
I used to be the number one best customer for scent away and made it homemade with pretty good results.
Last few years my clothes go into a dedicated plastic trash can in the garage loaded with a potpourri of native ragweed and strong plants.
Combined with a clean shower and doe p spray or tinks relax l really don't use the scent away anymore and my deer busting me has dropped to a very very minimum.

I do use some, but I also use attractants that I have had good luck with. That said, use the wind always! I try to set up a few stands for different winds, and have the approach in my favor as well, that has improved my hunting 10 fold!

Use 100 Proof Vodka in a spray bottle. Seriously. Most of the alcohol evaporates and whats left absorbs and neutralizes scent.

Just keep your clothes clean with unscented detergent. Sweat smells.

Yep, I dress light for my treck in. Heavy gear goes on when I cool down at the hunting sight. Baking Soda in your laundry works great too.

I’ve read that most human scent comes from your breath and your head. Where I hunt, deer can come to my kill plot from any direction. So if the wind takes my scent from my box blind to a certain direction, I just don’t pay attention to that direction. It works for me.

I agree, I have nothing to back this up but I always keep my lower face covered. I figure when it's chilly and you can see your breathe if you don't have it covered it blows out and drift away. But if it's covered it tends to drift upwards as it has less velocity to move horizontally.Boo wrote: ↑Tue Sep 27, 2022 7:41 pmI’ve read that most human scent comes from your breath and your head. I figure that happens all the time you just can't see it.

I had 6-8 deer come down a trail I was walking on where there was a small tree in the middle and the trail went around it on both sides, I was rifle hunting and stood behind that small tree with the rifle in the Y as they came toward me, they never knew I was there until they either got alongside me or behind me. I had posted before that I had to lay a lit cigar down as a deer came to the base of a small ridge where I was sitting during flintlock season, two years ago I had a small buck about 8-10' from me, never knew I was there!
Do I believe in sent blocker---not one bit, but IMO wind direction and not making quick movement is critical.

This. I was OCD about scent control for a bunch of years. Made not a wit of difference. Wind is the only thing that matters. Kill more deer now wearing stinky diesel stained clothes smoking cigars. Fill all my tags every year just playing the wind. They did a trial a few years ago with blood hounds that have about the same sense of smell as a deer. Hound(s) found the hunters every time in roughly the same amount of time no matter what scent control measures the hunter employed.
I haven't washed my ghillie suit in god knows how many years. Still kill deer with it every year.

You mix the Vodka with water, about 3 parts water 1 part Vodka. It works.

Re: Homemade scent killer
Last year I thought I would keep a piece of candy in my mouth to cover up any bad breath. The candy I chose was Anise from a local Amish store because I heard it was a smell that attracts deer..Boo wrote: ↑Tue Sep 27, 2022 7:41 pmI’ve read that most human scent comes from your breath and your head. I had two bucks come in with their nose in the air trying to find where the smell was coming from an picked me out from 40 yards away.
Perhaps I should stuff a box of baking soda in my mouth this year.
