Just a thought

I think the recommended load in Ontario for Turkeys is a #4 steel shot, and there is another load called Turkey load which is #4bismuth I believe.
The bismuth is supposed to pack quite a punch for the turks. I am not sure who makes it!
I personnally use Federal, and not for any particular reason except they are always available, seem to be pretty clean and they work well!
I think even with the #4 if you don't place your shot well, the pellets could bounce off of a Turkeys feathers, that is what I hear anyway, so I believe it is also recommended to go for a head or neck shot! That definately works!
Sorry I couldn't be more specific about the Turkey load, I will be getting some tonight, if you haven't had one of the other guys tell you what it is I will post it for you!
Happy Hunting

Congrats on the Mossberg! I currently hunt with a Mossberg 835 Combo Barrel package in camo. One barrel for Turkey and the other is the rifle barrel to shoot sabot slugs since the land I own is in a Shotgun Only County. I found Load #5 from Winchester works the best for my shotgun. I tried other brands and loads and found this brand/load to pattern the best. Give Winchester Double X Magnum Turkey loads in 3 inch 2 oz load #5. Buy only one box and buy other brands as well to see which works best for your shotgun. My brother in law uses Remington ammo and he has a Mossbeg 500 like you and uses load #5 and patterns very well. So go have some fun at the range shooting various brands and loads that work best for you!! Rodney.

Buckshot,
4/5/6 are the only legal shot sizes for turkeys in Ontario. Personally I prerfer 6's (more shot denser pattern). There really is no recommendation though. You really need to pattern the gun with different shot sizes at different ranges. Get a pattern sheet with a life size turkey head and put some rounds through it. I think you want at least 7 to 9 pellets in the head and neck area. I have a 870 Express Mag. I shoot 3 in. 6 Federal Premium's with 2 oz of shot. Furthest I've killed a turkey is 30 yds. but if I had a bird at 40 yds and he appeared to be hung up I'd definitely let him have it. As for steel/lead/bisthmus, I would definitley not shoot steel, and I would not pay the extra cost for bisthmus when lead is perfectly legal. Non-toxic shot is illegal only for migratory birds.

Don't ever use steel shot.
Use lead. I like the the Winchester Magnum Turkey loads in 2 3/4 inch 1 5/8 oz load of #4 for my 2 3/4 inch guns and the 3 inch 2 oz load of #4 for my 3 inch guns.

What a nice gun!!! Went with DEAD-EYE to pick up his shotgun yesterday, what a beaut! I'll let him give you guys all the details if he wants, I just have to say that it is a nice gun. I saw a nice .270 there that I might be buying. It is a Remington 700 SPS Detachable Magazine, gotta talk to the parents about it, they told me to phone around and make sure it is a good price before I rush into it, so hopefully I can get back up there and buy it next weekend!

Taxman, you are probably talking autos. Pumps are quite dependable no matter what the brand.

Hey Dead eye,

Let me know how you like the new shotty. I've been looking for a good pump to replace my old 870. The Mossberg seems like best bang for your buck. A new 870 is like $800...too much for me at the moment.

I have shot a pile of Turk in Cumberland Furnace, Tenn. Damn things are so numerous they hold up traffic when they cross the road. It is nothing to see flocks of 60 to 100 birds in the fields during the Fall. Almost got to the point of being pests. You do not have to be much of a hunter to shoot Turks in Tenn. Steel just don't do it. For penetration and reach use only copper jacketed lead. The copper holds the shape and gives you depth and the lead give you the weight you need to for reach and shocking power. Size matters. But it has more to do with the type of terrain you are hunting in. If you are hunting a soft edge where you have good concealment and close shots don't worry too much about your pellet. If you are hunting open hardwoods you better have reach.
