Bragging time: Longest hunting shot
What's the longest hunting shot anybody on here has made with their Excal? Forty yards? Fifty yards?

A bullet travels (depending on a what deer cartridge) approx 2300 to 3200fps. the bullet will hit that deer before the animal hears the report from the rifle at 1-500yards therefore the animal will never jump or jerk as a result of the noise a gun makes. (unless you miss)
An arrow or bolt travels at max 350fps sound travels I believe more than twice that speed so the animal will hear the Crossbow or bow before the bolt or arrow gets there Therefore the longer the distance you shoot a deer at , the more time the animal has to react to the noise and jump the string or jerk causing your bolt or arrow to potentially not hit it's mark. Also the longer the shot with archery equipment the less accurate. too many unpredictable variables when shooting long ranges with a peice of archery equipment.
Having said that I don't feel it is right to shoot at an animal with a gun at 500 yards if you don't practice that shot routinely. Even 200 yards is a long shot if you don't practice it. No worse feeling than wounding an animal.
Just my oppinion.

OK. I agree with everybody on taking long shots and as an example here is what can happen. I normally limit my shots to 30 yds or less. A few years back I had a buck eating apples at about 33 yds. He was quartering away and I decided to take the shot. The result was, I hit him in the rear hip. The good news is I must have hit a major artery, because he want 25 yds and keeled over. This taught me a good lesson, not only to limit my distances but know my distances before I shoot.
The farther the shot the smaller the target becomes (vitals) and to me it boils down to responsiblilty not taboo. The smaller the target the greater the chance of wounding and causing unnecessary suffering of an animal. I hate to see an animal suffer due to irresponsible hunting~! If the animal does not present me with a decent shot of 1 - 30 yards he wins~!Boltshooter wrote:Why is there a taboo about taking longer range shots with a crossbow, say in the neighborhood of fifty yards
Just my opinion from up here in the cheap seats~!

long shots
I'm really glad folk here didn't/don't play into that longest shot scene. I don't even have a crossbow yet, but I can see things like that being ammo to put down the whole sport.
I think it is high time hunting was seen as a skill sport, not just a matter of killing something, somehow.

The best thing for the inside of a man is the outside of a horse.
Great discussion. I agree that shots at game should be limited to about 30 yards. I shoot an Exocet and have shot targets out to 45 yards and am amazed at how much the bolt drops between 30 and 40 yards. Try it sometime. Not only will you spook the animal trying long shots, you will likely have to guess where the bolt will strike and risk having a trophy run off to suffer and possibly die. Don't spook him, enjoy watching a magnificent animal and try to get closer next time. striper
May your days be long and your hunts many. Pray that the God of the Bible will protect you as you go.
