string tracer question??

Post by tigertrout »

Does anyone use a string tracer for their crossbow and if so have you noticed any effect on trajectory at longer distances??

I have never used one on a crossbow but I use to put one on my compound vertical bow when I was hunting in the rain or if I might not be able to look for a wounded deer the next day. I only shot on deer with one and was grateful I had it on that night.

I didn't think I hit the deer which was quartering away from me. Normally I would get down and check the arrow but since I didn't feel the string run out I figured I'd missed and would get the arrow when I got down at dark. When I went to retrieve the arrow I was following the string as I went and all of a sudden the string took a right turn. :? I was trying to figure out how that happened when it dawned on my that I'd hit the deer :D

I followed the string, winding it up as I went for about a 100 yards when I came upon the dead fork horned buck. I hadn't made a very good shot but the string had lassoed the tail. The arrow was hanging out of the hip by the head. I noted that I had hit the femoral artery and when I field dressed it I found the track of the arrow was pretty significant . It had cut the femora artery, went through the guts, pierced the diaphragm put an X in the heart and then came back out again. I was pretty impressed. I probably would have found the deer without the string tracker but it sure made it easier :D

I might consider using one on a X bow if it were raining.

use em in the rain or in the early season where the brush is really heavy where I hunt. They worked pretty good for me but don't shoot past 30 yards max
