Hi guys,
Been very busy around the new place for the last few days. repairing old sheds, burning rubish and cutting grass etc. I am going to do the Firearms safety, and hunters education course next month at the comunity college in Miramichi. I have paid my due's and bought the books! It feels like going back to school in my old age! :roll:
I was wondering if any forum members had done the course and, if so, what can I expect? As you will probably all know, I have to do this to be able to aquire, and use firearms, and to be able to aquire a hunting licence. I suppose most on this forum will already have licences and firearms, and don't need to do these courses, but maybe there are a few "newbies" like me, who have gone through it.
If all goes well, I may start out on the hunting trail next year. I hope I do get through, because I hate to think of wasting $116 !!
I suppose most of you are eager to get out hunting eh? :D Well I wish you all great success, and maybe I will be just as eager as you are in the near future! :wink: But please be careful out there :!:

Thanks for the confidence booster TYE. It does seem like common sense in the books, so maybe I'll be ok!? :roll: It does seem like a lot of work just to be able to shoot and hunt though eh? Still, I suppose there have to be rules, and safety is very very important, so I don't mind having to do the courses.

Spank how do you think Tye got through the course. :lol: :lol: Just joking Tye. You will do alright Grizzled for I help my wife study for the course and she passed with no problems.

Hehehe :lol: I'm not stoned. I don't do that.

Grizzled, safety is important. I have still done lots of stupid things though, ya can't always help it. I've slipped and fallen and had the butt of my gun smack on a log or something, never know it could go off. I had a habbit of playing with my safety while I'm walking with my rifle slinged on my shoulder. By playing with it I mean I'm constantly making sure the safety is on. I'm always scared that it might pop off and a twig or branch might get stuck in the trigger part and KABOOM!

I've also fallen down hills and stepped off small drop offs by accident. Things happen. Just be carefull.

Pardon my Ontario geography ignorance, but is Miramichi in Ontario :?: The only one I know of is in NB.

The reason why I ask is becasue it is important to take the test in the province you live and hunt in. I moved here from NS and could not transfer my hunter's safety card to here. I had to take the test here for Ontario before I could get a licence here. I took the test last summer. I did not have to take the course, just pass the exam. If you have never had a hunting licence before you have to take the course and the test.

Get a copy of the Hunter's Safety book and the Ontario 2005 Hunting Regulations. The test has questions on material from the book and the regulations both. There is also a practical part of the test where you must identify rifles, shotguns, bows, and ammunition. You will also have to handle a firearm and proove that you know how to carry it in a safe manner. Make sure you always check to see if it is unloaded EVERY time you pick it up!

Just read over the book and the regulations and you'll do fine. Relax and take your time, it is a lot of common sense.

Don't worry. They teach you everything you need to know. They're not there to flunk you, but to make sure you do things safely.

When my son took the course, they impressed upon the students that it was important to obey all the safety rules they were taught when handling the guns for the test. For instance do not point the gun at the instructor or you will fail.

Straight forward enough. Common sense for sure.

All in all, it's a fun thing to do. Don't sweat it.

Back to school. Back to school, to prove to Dad that I'm not a fool. I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, I hope I don't get in a fight. :lol:
