How's it going? I am looking for a Crossbow, and Excalibur was suggested quite a few times on another site I visit. I am 120 pounds and 5'7" and would like one to fit me. What would you suggest, or is it better to try and find a dealer and go look myself?
A 150lb Vixen is the lightest in weight and draw weight and will take any North American prey as will the 175lb Pheonix. Both these xbows are the same diamentions.
Find a dealer near you and try them and make a decision on what feels best for you.
Why do you want a crossbow? For hunting or target shooting? If hunting, what would you be hunting? You can always try one at the dealer and see how easy it would be to kock it without a string cocking aid. If you're worried about how strong you are, a Vixen is easy to handle and will easily take a deer down.

I'm looking for a crossbow for hunting. We are going to Wyoming, and will be shooting Antelope with the crossbow. Also for Deer. I have used my husbands, which is the Exomag, But I need shorter pulling hooks, which apparantly you can get. (it seemed like my arms weren't quite long enough. ) I don't find it heavy or bulky in anyway, and fired it right on target.
I also don't like using someone elses things. I definetely want my own, and want to get a good one the first time.
I'm short statured, and find the Phoenix is comfortable to use. The Vixen is also a good choice, but the Phoenix gives a little more speed for the same power stroke. If I were not using a rope cocking aid I would pick the Vixen, but with the rope aid the weight is cut in half, so the Phoenix is still easy to use. The Phoenix can get up to 305 fps velocity, and is plenty for deer size critters. Arrow placement and broadhead sharpness are much more important than draw weight. The only real advantage to the heavier models is a little added velocity, but I find anything in the 300 fps range is fine for deer out to (and even slightly beyond under ideal circumstances) 30 yards.
Good Luck on the Wyoming Antelope hunt. I would recommend the Phoenix. Works great for the ranges you may be shooting out here and the pull length should work for you. Where will you be hunting in Wyo.
Later,
Dale
