Extremely angry

Post by raydaughety »

 Last year, my wife bought me 3 packs of G 5 Montecs, a sportsman's sharpener and a stone that is 600 on one side and I think 1300 on the other. I also have the dvd. I sat home ALL WEEKEND trying to sharpen these God forsaken things. I'm 40, fairly intelligent, except for a daily dosage of morphine to block out the backpain from a 3 level spinal fusion and enjoying my new wheelchair. How smart does one have to be to sit for hours on end watching a man on vidio, copying his every move, in the end, He's smiling with a broadhead in his hand that will cut a rubber band looped around 2 nails 6 inches apart and says " a few more smooth passes in the fine stone and you can shave hair off your arm " BULL, I think you can put me over in that batch of stupid asses that couldn't sharpen a broadhead if his life depended on it. There has to be something out there that takes no mental effort, a machine of some sort that you stick the broadhead in, push a button and wa-la, out comes a broadhead that'll shave hair off a gorilla's arm  Any help :?: :?: I'm sure it's me not the broadhead.
God Bless !!!!!!!!!

Ray Image I don't know for sure, however you may be putting to much pressure on the Montec.

bstout posted a good thread/post on sharping BH's and so did wabi. You may want to do a search and see if you can find them. I use the diam.stone by Montec and can get mine sharp enough to shave with Image

Here be one by partikle which is very good :!:

Ray,
Have you tried different heads from different packs? Could be you got one that wasn't properly treated.

Wabi, I've tried them all and the best results I can get is with the sportsmans sharpener with the carbide squares. Sorry I flew off the handle earlier, must be the meds. Someone told me to use water on my diamond stone ?

I know I tried a couple times...not with G5s but other blades (like Muzzys and Wasps) and I could get them sharp to include shaving hair - but never like they were new from the package. Last year I took six deer, lost one...a total of seven sets of replacement blades...under $20= Zero frustration.

bstout I was a lucky one as far as two blade BH's go, bear, BenP, and others mostly Fred Bear, instant gratification. As for the Montec G5's did take a while as wabi can tell ya they gave me a very large HEADACHEImage however with some advise from wabi I can now sharpen them, plus my slicktricks with relative easy Image

I went to a large archery shop and asked them to take a look and see what I was doing wrong. After I tried and failed, the owner said, " now watch" then with slow medium strokes on the 6oo grit stone, and a few real light back and forth strokes, He then turned the stone over to the 1200 grit side and gave it just a couple of light strokes, felt the broadhead and asked me to leave them with him and pick them back up after my dr. appointment. When I got back, he picked up the phone, called G-5 and they gave me they're address and asked me to pack up everything and send it to them. I guess I'm just one of those that just doesn't have the patience to sharpen them. ( Neither did the owner of the shop ) they're going to replace them, I'm going to sell em and go back to slick tricks, at least I can replace they blades as needed.
God Bless !!!!!!!!!

I know how you feel Ray, the old timer who taught me how to sharpen leather knifes and tools used to smile and laugh when I first tried. He take one and have it razor sharp in no time at all. Point is I was trying to hard, too much pressure and to many swipes all I was doing was taking off the sharp edge I just put on. Its all about the feel and the angle and the pressure. One swipe with to much pressure and the edge is gone. My heart gose out to you with your injury. I myself was hit by a hit and run driver while I was on my horse back in 2000. Left me there for dead. I went though the neck fusion, plugs from my hip. fused 2 though 7 on me reconstuctive surgery on my face and all sorts of other great thing. Doctors told me I would never walk again after have 3 vertbra driven though my spinal cord and 3 of them crushed I know exactly how ya feel. Today I cycle 30 miles 3 times a week and run 3 to 5 miles a week. So you just hang in there and things will improve faster than you know it. I know the medication makes you feel out of place to but that will pass also. As for sharpening as it has been said by some others here a little at a time and you will get that feel for it.

Ray,
Sounds like you are probably doing the smart thing in switching to a replacement blade type broadhead. I think anyone with the ability to sharpen knives, tools, and broadheads agree it's not a "natural" ability, but a learned process, and sometimes the learning curve is a lengthy one. One big complaint I have with today's blades is that manufacturers make most blades a lot harder than they need to be. Some of the new knives are a real challenge to get sharp even with the new sharpening devices available.
I often switch to replacement blade heads when I don't have the time & patience to sharpen the fixed blades. I find if I'm tense or in a hurry things just don't go well, and if I'm counting down the minutes I need to get to my hunting spot it isn't the time to be touching up the edge on my broadheads. If I've got all day with nothing to do, a couple of strokes on the stone and they're razor sharp - if I'm running late I can whet for an hour and they're duller than when I started!

Ray I agree with you ,,, there is definately somthing to these heads that is strange,, first of all I did not think that they were very sharp out of the package ,,

Then after practice and testing I tried to sharpen them with mixed results ,, I have a pretty good "feel for steel " if you will and I think that the steel used IN THIS HEAD IS PRETTY MEDIOCORE AT BEST It does not respond to a fine mill file at all ,,,, This is largely due to the coarse nature of the molecules in the steel ,,

I am a shoot and rinse of in the creek and file kind of guy,, If you cannot do that with a hunting head,, then I deem it worthless,,,,I had been a vert hunter for nearly 40 years ,,I can sharpen all manner of fixed or replaceables with a fine mill file with just a few strokes to shaving sharp ,, only a minor touch to finish on a crock stick and they are all surgical ,,,,

The Montecs are completely different,, again I believe it is the composition of the metal and not the blade angle that makes them for Me,, almost impossible to sharpen ... I am not happy with them based on this fact ...

I pulled out a dull muzzy four blade to make sure I was not losing it ,, and with 7 light stokes per blade of my fine mill file they were surgical once more ,,,

Slick trick steel responds wonderfully to a file by the way ,,, and these are what I will shootin from my exocet 200 this fall

Its them not you !!!!
