Dogs gone missing..

Post by Pydpiper »

Our old dog who has a habit of running away from our country home when he gets the chance, has disappeared once again, this time the circumstances are very different.
A few weeks ago our dog went deaf, not terribly unexpected for a dog of his age, I got him for my wifes birthday, 11 years ago as a pup from the pound. Excessively intelligent, great with all our kids and one of the most obedient dogs I have ever had, except for this habit of disappearing every now and then, only to return that night with his head down.
He has been on a leash 2 times in his life, and yesterday we had to chain him up as we relocated some fencing to assist in our renovations, he ran away with a 10' chain around his neck, a big chain.
All I can imagine is him being hung up in a field on one of his "short cuts" with no ability to move. This is a terrible weight to carry, my wife is devastated.
If anyone sees an old Shepard running through the woods with a chain big enough to pull a truck, give me a shout. :(

David,

Good luck in finding him. That's a load to carry around for a old dog. He should be relatively close.

I hope you are able to locate him soon.
I had one come into my yard the other day dragging a long heavy chain. I tried calling the dog warden since she had no tag or owner's name, but got an answering machine, so I unsnapped the chain and let the dog go her merry way.

Thank you for the kind words everyone, this is without doubt the longest he has been away from home.
I am gearing up the quad for a search run tonight, my first stop is my next door neighbor, he must have done some modifications to his helicopter, he has been out two days in a row flying over the same area I am about to cover, I will ask him to keep an eye out too.

Hope somebody finds him, had that happen in the past, makes you sick thinking they are all alone in the bush.

Hi I hope you find him safe. Hopefully that chain just slows him down and not stops him. Wishing you luck in your search. It would not be a nice way to end a long and dear relationship.

No dog as of yet, I have talked to every neighbor within reason, walked every path I could think of.
I have signs up in our store, and reports in with every dog pound that he could possibly gain access to.
My family is dragging around, even our 16 month old knows something is very wrong.

I am heading to Detroit for the weekend, my house (his kennel) will be checked on several times a day, I also provided a secondary phone number for a local person to grab him should he be seen or snagged up by a local. I can only hope he he manages to find his way home.

He is home!
last night at midnight my wife woke up to a bark in the garage, it was our dog, home.
His chain and collar were gone, and he came home wearing a new black nylon collar, sorta weird, but it doesn't really matter, he's home. This is a pretty exciting place to be right now. :D

Thanks everyone for their kind words and Pm's.
