Scent Free Products

Post by DeepSouthHunter »

I thought it would be interesting to start a thread to see what "scent free" products everyone uses for deer season. I'm interested in deodorants, soaps and shampoos, clothes wash, etc. The Hunter's Specialties and other brands marketed towards hunters are just too expensive for my liking so I'm looking for alternatives. What do you guys and gals normally use?

I don't use most of the"scent free" products. I use and like "Sport Wash" for my clothes,
but sometimes we also use it for other laundry, when we don't want smell or
soap residule in our clothes.
The regular Head and Shoulders for my
hair, because I can't stand hunters type soap, it itches.
Sure unscented anti-perspirant, like I always do.
Plain old unscented anti-bacterial liquid soap for my body.

The only "stuff" that I have ever seen work was a product called
Ghost. The guy at the archery shop where I bought my exomag had it on display. He took some Tinks 69 and put a dab on the back of my hand and let it dry. A few minutes later he sprayed the ghost on my hand and the smell was gone!!! I never saw the stuff again. I use arm & Hamour baking soda in the wash and in the shower. I make a paste out of it and put it under my arms and my papa parts. I keep some in my pack and sprinkle it in my hair if I get sweaty this time of year. But..... didn't you know that you just "forget the wind and hunt" .
God Bless !!!!!!!!!

I've used hunter's scent eliminating spray for when I've had dog pee to clean up. Works really well, better than the pet-specific products I've tried in the past.

I'm going to try Scent Smoker this year. Its a pale with a baffle to pump air into it. Add hardwood chips, light and let the smoke saturate your clothes and hair. Suppose to act like the carbon product yet, but better. We will see.

Yea, "pro" hunters decked out from head to toe in scentlok never get winded; do they?

Seriously, it's hard to watch the TV shows without one of these "pro" hunters saying " he winded us and there is nothing that you can do about it ". If they get all this stuff free from sponsors and then show you deer spooking on a regular basis; then what does that tell you?

The "new" odor you produce after taking scent control measures sure stinks just as bad (actually worse) as what you think you have eliminated.

Fact is: you can't eliminate your scent. No matter what: your head is pouring it out like a chiimney, and there ain't no stopping it.

And as soon as everyone realizes that, which they can by taking Anatomy and Physiology 101, they can save a lot of money by just hunting the wind and keeping the clothes they wear in an airtight container with some forage from the area they hunt in.

Companies aren't out to help you harvest a big buck...they're out to remove the money from your wallet and they know their target audience and how to play them.

The biggest buck I've ever seen in person was shot with a bow at 20 yards by a friend of my Grandfather when I was 12. He was wearing a red and black checkered jacket lined with wool, a pair of brown trousers, hiking boots that had seen better days and he had a full breakfast (sausage, eggs, hash and coffee) that morning. He didn't brush his teeth and he smoked like a chimney. If anyone was going to get winded, it would be him...but, he knew where he was going to sit based on the wind that morning and that buck now hangs on his grandson's wall, because he sadly passed two years ago.

The wind is your biggest asset. Use it to your advantage. No product is going to enable you to hunt from a stand that isn't huntable when the wind is blowing in a certain direction.

same here... no soaps, washes, wipes or other crap.. UV killers and etc included

hunt the wind.. I havent had any issues hunting that way since I was 9 :P

save your money on the washes and stuff please!!! No matter what wash you use, you body is gonna sweat and give off scent. No matter what wash on your clothes you use, you still have to touch them to out them on. Just think about it. The only way to be scent free is to get a scent free bubble to live in and hunt out of :P

they may help.. but by the time you shower and go through your house you have picked up scents and etc on your body and clothes. Just spray down with scent away on your boots, clothes, hat, and etc before you head to your stand and after a few hours in your stand.

Wash my cloths with oderless baby soap. Beat the jacket and pants with Cedar, branches been working for years. After the hunt put the cloths in a plastic bag with more cedar.

i dont doubt it.. just dont see the need for it :P Ive been very blessed over the years and all of these deer didnt tell me if I should have used scent away soap or not :P All I worry about is hunting the wind and not going into a area educating deer untill its ideal conditions. No matter how much scent away stuff you do, if you hunt an area to much deer will pick up on that and sooner or later pick up on your scent and never return

im actaully considering chewing on fresh acorns to appeal more to deer when i breathe though

I normally get off the tractor, put on my hunting clothes and head to my stand. Maybe they just like the smell of tractors and land  8)

I buy the scent free shampoo from wal-mart. I use it to wash my clothes also. I have a tote i keep my hunting clothes in. If spice wood grows where you hunt break some off and put it in your tote. I also use fresh earth scent waffers. I have used the home made scent spray. Seems to work ok. Its real handy for washing your knife and hands after you get them red. :D

I use Sport wash too, not just for the lack of scent but for the retention of waterproofing abilities and lack of UV brighteners.

I hear you crazyfarmer. However, it seems that most places where I hunt the wind tends to swirl a lot! I have two good places where I like to hunt and before I started using some scent blocking things I could not hunt them without getting picked off really fast; before deer even got within bow range. After I started using this stuff, I can now hunt them and rarely get picked off. So is this only my imagination? Well, the prove is in the pudding as they say. I just know what has worked for me and what hasn't worked. Heck, sometimes I just like to experiment along with hunting. It makes things exciting.
