An interesting morning

Post by grouse »

After taking almost two weeks off from hunting because it was too hot, I went back out Thurs. morning. About a half hour after shooting hours began I started to hear lots of turkey flock talk. After a while I spotted one turkey then another and before long the woods was full of turkeys. I was in a tripod stand in the corner of a crop field where I can watch the woods and the field. The stand has a 360 degree shooting rail and a swivel seat that rotates around completely. The turkeys were getting closer and closer and a couple of them were actually in range, but didn't offer a good shot. I have killed about 35 turkeys in my life but all but one were killed with a shotgun, that one I shot with a recurve long bow years ago. I was anxious to finally get one with my crossbow.

As I sat there with my SE 350 on the shooting rail, ready for the chance I was sure was coming, I heard a noise behind me on the trail that goes around the perimeter of the corn field. I looked back and a big doe was trotting by 10 yards away. I spun around and got the scope on her just as she stopped to get ready to go into the woods (deer almost always stop briefly before they go from one type of environment into another). She was turned just enough sideways to give me a potentially fatal shot, and I pulled the trigger. It couldn't have been more than 3 or 4 seconds since I was just watching the turkeys. The lumenock lit up and I watched it go right where I aimed. The doe leapt into the woods and collapsed a few yards in. My first crossbow turkey will have to happen on another day. I have a few pictures and I'll try to attach them later.
