Congratulations Pydpiper.
Way to hang in there and never give up. Your persistance paid off.
It really is a rush isn't it.
Enjoy telling the story, re-living the experience, BBQ ing the chops cold beer in hand, having friends and family over for venison roast, and I bet you can't wait till next year.
That deer-hauling helper of yours is a keeper too.
You done it man.

Congrats Dave, it is exciting and a unique experience when you get the first deer. You got off easy no tracking no worrying, here's hoping they all are like that for you. You better go look for that Surefire adds some expense to that deer for sure. If you don't find it you can call your deer the Surefire deer.

Only a couple points on each side, sure wont be making a rattle out of them..
I will post a picture when I get him cleaned up a bit, it was a rough go through the river last night. I went out this morning to look for my flashlight, found it in 3' of water.
I walked the whole area again just because I could, wore waders this time. I measured the distance of the deer and he was 9 feet from where I was sitting, ran 15 yards and crumpled, rolled half way down the cliff. I have no idea why this arrow broke, or why it didn't pass through, I think I may have hit him a bit high, I practice a lot, but not from 9'. All I could see in the scope was hair.
The other neat thing is the hole left by the Slick trick, a perfect "X" going in.
Now I have another tag to use!

It was the first of my life!
To get the antlers off, do I saw them or can I get them from the base somehow..?
I think I am going to process this thing myself, is there a good reason not to?

Both bucks I shot this year,,,,,I just took a chain saw to there noggins. Get someone to hold his nose into the ground, and one cut 3-4 " straight down along the ears. Flip the head right side up and make another cut between the eyes and antlers to intersect with the other cut. Clean out all the gook. Skin the remaining hide off. Let dry good.
I come by my name honestly.
