I realy do not thing that deer see orange or other coluers like humans .we drive hunt small bush lots around home in the gun hunt and have a spot were to blockers set up in a fence row 300 yards from the bush across a open corn feild when pushed the deer run across the open field to this fence row and yuo can clearly see the two shoters standing waiting for them to get close as long as thy stay still the deer will run between them every time and thy are wearing 400 square inches of orange plus a hat the only time thy vary is if thy see movment from these two shoters .I think it is the movment that thy pic up on not the coluer my 2 cents DUTCH

Little known fact:

Wisconsin originally required hunters in gun season to wear at least 400 sq. inches of pumpkin, but it didn't work out.

Took my two largest (one 200#+..fully dressed) while wearing a blaze orange parka and hat (.270 Win). One still hunting, and one from a tree stand.
So,....from my experience deer are color blind. But they sure can see movement!!!

I've killed deer wearing a full orange vest and hat on the NWR land around here. It is MOVEMENT that gives you away. Gotta watch the hats, and gloves are a definite no-no!

I've also killed quite a few deer wearing bib overalls, flannel shirts and chore jackets.

Camo gear is much overrated ... and a BUSINESS.

That said, it can help some, but it isn't nearly as important as folks make it.

Nothing helps like being hidden and / or staying still.

The first time I ever went out a doe came right up to me. I had on the orange vest and was sitting against a tree. She looked right at me and kept on eating like I wasn't there.

When I was gun hunting about 18 years ago I had a doe come with in 20 feet of me and laid down ,and she saw me and I was dressed in blazeorange complet, still have not figured out why she didn't spook? She laid there for allmost an hour ,got up and wandered away.

I think it has been decided that deer can see blue. I have a orange vest that is 30 years old and that seems to work okay but the new ones with all the ultra violet brightners really seem to spook um. I've watched deer come out and spot me 25 feet up a tree wearing new blaze orange even though Im not moving a muscle. A new vest almost glows in the dark. With the new one I have, I have been hanging it outside for two years to bleach in the sun and have the wife wash it every time she does the laundry and it is still not right.

Most brand name laundry detergents have UV brighteners right in them now, so washing with them won't take the shine off new hunting clothes. Try getting the cheapest no name detergent you can find and wash it a few times to strip the UV brightener. then wash in a scent free hunting detergent (to get rid of the harsh, cheap soap) without UV brightener.

Read an article last year about a study on deer eyesight that used light filters to simulate the rod and cones in a deer's eyes. The result was blaze orange is seen as a dull yellow, similar to dried leaves, and blue was seen as florenscent purple. Who can saw how accurate it is, but I don't worry about blaze orange ( the deer don't seem to either) and don't wear blue jeans hunting anymore.

I dont believe deer can see orange from my personal experience. They can see the shine on new shiny hunting clothes. I have had them almost step on me in my old tatterd stuff and never give a second look.
