finally got one!!!!!!!!
It's been a frustrating year so far. We had an early acorn crop and all the deer scattered to feast on acorns making hunting difficult. To top it off I misjudged yardage on a big doe last week and shot under her. Saturday evening the odds finally caught up with me, and I can no longer claim a 100% recovery rate on deer, but I'll skip the details and just say that a total of 20 man-hours searching for what looked like a well hit buck left me with nothing but a sick feeling, and asking myself if I really wanted to continue bowhunting.
I figured the best thing to do was climb back in the stand and keep trying, and tonight a really nice 8 pointer gave me a patience test. He was within 20 yards in a clear shooting lane, but never offered a sure-thing shot, so I let him walk. About 10 minuites later while I was questioning my ethics and sanity a medium doe walked into another shooting lane at 11 yards and gave me a perfect broadside pose. She's in the processor's cooler now, and I feel like a deer hunter again
about forgot the details
Excalibur Exocet crossbow
GoldTip Laser II w/4" feather fletching & brass insert (302 fps)
SlickTrick 100 grain broadhead
Double lung hit & 15 yard recovery (I watched her stop after 5 yards, walk into some standing weeds & lay down then give up her spirit) Immediately offered a prayer to Creator to watch over her spirit in thanks for her gift to me and my family.

Wabi,
Congratulations on your harvest. You've been around long enough to know that what you did was the right thing. Looking long and hard for that lost buck, then not taking the chancy shot even though you "might" have made it, and waiting for he clean kill and thankfully short recovery. Good stuff. Don't be too hard on yourself about the buck. It (unfortunately) happens. Been there, feel that. If he went down he was not wasted. He has supplied a welcome feast for many others. Enjoy the success of your hunt, and many more to come.
